FIREFLIES ROUT PELICANS IN 18-2 SLUGFEST: The Fireflies beat up on the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, scoring six runs in the first and never looking back, beating the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 18-2 at Segra Park Saturday night at Segra Park. Columbia's (11-3) bats got started right away. After Jean Ramirez drew a lead-off walk, River Town singled and Carter Jensen drew a walk to load the bases with one out in the top of the first. After a run scored on a wild pitch, Guillermo Quintana and Kyle Hayes were both hit by a pitch to bring the score to 2-0 with the bases loaded. Next, Gary Camarillo poked a single through the left side of the infield to plate another pair of runs and put Columbia up 4-0. Joshua Rivera capped off the inning, driving a single to right that scored both Kyle Hayes and Gary Camarillo to put the Fireflies in front by half a dozen. The bats didn't stop there though, they added another two runs in the second inning. Enrique Valdez doubled to score Carter Jensen and then Quintana offered a single that scored the third baseman, increasing Columbia's lead to 8-0. In the third, Columbia added another four behind Dayton Dooney's third homer of the season and second of the series and another Guillermo Quintana knock. While Pelicans' (7-7) starter Jose Miguel Gonzalez (L, 6-1) didn't make it through the first, Ben Kudrna (W, 1-3) spun a career-high five frames, to earn his first win of the season. It's the first time that Kudrna, Frank Mozzicato or Shane Panzini, the three high school draftees selected in the first four rounds of the 2021 draft by the Royals have gone five innings or earned a win this season.
MAKING MY WAY DOWN TOWN: Fireflies outfielder River Town is on a roll. As he singled in the first inning of Saturday's game, Town reached base safely in his 24th-consecutive game, which is the longest active streak in Class-A baseball. He is tied for the seventh-longest active streak in Minor League Baseball. Colson Montgomery has reached safely in 43 games dating back to April 24. The longest on-base streak in A-ball this season belonged to Denzel Clarke of the Stockton Ports. The outfielder reached safely in 37 games from April 14-June 11. To crack the top-10 list in 2022, Town needs to reach safely in 25-straight games. The longest franchise on-base streak belongs to Jeremy Vasquez who reached safely in 28-consecutive games from April 5-May 6, 2018.
BOMBS AWAY: Last night, the Fireflies scored a season-high 18 runs, which is their most runs since they set a franchise-record 21 runs in a win over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers August 10, 2021. Both Jean Ramirez and Carter Jensen tied Fireflies season-highs scoring four runs in the win.
NEW YEAR, NEW ME: The second half of the season started last Thursday, which reset each team's record to 0-0. The Fireflies finished the first half (66 games) 28 games back of Myrtle Beach, who had the best record in Minor League Baseball. After starting the second-half 11-3, the Fireflies are in first place and possess a magic number of 51 to clinch the first playoff berth in franchise history.
AMAZING AVILA: Righty Luinder Avila is the only qualifying pitcher for the Columbia Fireflies this season. Last week, after working six innings without allowing an earned run and punching out nine GreenJackets hitters, he earned Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors. He continued his hot stretch yesterday, spinning five frames and allowing a single earned run. It was enough to earn his fifth win of the season as the Fireflies beat Myrtle Beach 5-3. In Avila's last three starts, dating back to June 25, he has tallied 17 innings while only allowing two earned runs (1.06 ERA). During the run, he has punched out 15 hitters while walking only a pair.
