'Birds Sweep Doubleheader from Red Sox with Dramatic Duo of One-Run Wins
July 10, 2022 - Carolina League (CarL)
Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Over the course of two exquisitely pitched games, the Delmarva Shorebirds scratched out just enough offense to sweep a doubleheader from the Salem Red Sox by scores of 2-1 and 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The wins gave the Shorebirds (26-54, 5-10) just their second series win of the season while the Red Sox (42-39, 7-8) suffered their third consecutive defeat.
Game One
The Shorebirds got on the board immediately in the bottom of the first. Luis Valdez walked and stole second before Heston Kjerstad doubled him in to give Delmarva 1-0 lead.
Salem equalized on the first pitch of the second when Tyler Miller walloped a solo homer off the rightfield foul pole, tying the game at 1-1.
The 1-1 deadlock was finally broken in the fifth when Valdez scored from third on a fielder's choice, giving the Shorebirds a 2-1 lead.
Salem had a chance to tie the game in the seventh, but Kier Meredith tried to score from first base on a single to right and was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
Ryan Long (3-4) picked up the win for the Shorebirds as he spun five innings of one-run ball on two hits and three walks, striking out seven.
Maceo Campbell (4-2) took the loss for Salem, allowing a run over two innings on a walk, striking out three.
Darlin Alcantara earned his first save for the Shorebirds, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing two hits and a walk, striking out one.
Game Two
The theme of dominant pitching continued into the second game of the twin bill.
Both sides traded zeroes on the scoreboard as Juan De Los Santos starte for Delmarva and tossed 3.2 innings of shutout ball before being relieved by Miguel Padilla who authored 1.1 scoreless frames of his own.
Hunter Dobbins went the first five in shutout style for Salem, striking out six before Gabriel Jackson came on in the sixth for him.
With the game still scoreless going into the last of the seventh, Frederick Bencosme doubled on the first pitch of the inning before Noelberth Romero lined a single on the very next pitch to left-center, scoring Bencosme and winning the game 1-0 for the Shorebirds.
Hector Perez (1-0) earned the win and completed the first shutout of the year for the Shorebirds, firing the final two frames scorelessly without allowing a hit while walking two and striking out two.
Jackson (5-7) suffered the loss for Salem, allowing a run in an inning-plus on two hits, striking out two.
Following an off-day on Monday, the Shorebirds begin a six-game series on Tuesday, July 12 at Five County Stadium against the Carolina Mudcats. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
