Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Despite being outhit 13-5 by the Carolina Mudcats, the Kannapolis Cannon Baller victory number four in a row, winning 8-5 Saturday night at Atrium Health Ballpark.
RHP Noah Owen started the night on the mound for Kannapolis, tossing five innings, allowing one run on eight hits, walking none, and striking out four. RHP Kohl Simas threw two innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit, striking out two and walking two in his return to Atrium Health Ballpark.
Carolina opened the scoring in the top of the first, going ahead 1-0 on a Jackson Chourio RBI single, scoring Hendry Mendez to gain the early advantage.
Andy Atwood evened the score 1-1 in the bottom of the third with his second home run of the season. The solo line drive to left field knotted the game in a tightly contested matchup.
Colby Smelley broke the tie unconventionally in the bottom of the fifth inning, earning first base on a hit-by-pitch, scoring Logan Glass to give the Ballers a 2-1 lead.
The Kannapolis lead did not last long, as Chourio caused trouble with a solo home run in the sixth inning. The No. 1 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization evened the score for the second time, making it 2-2.
All stayed calm until all mayhem broke out in the bottom of the eighth. With Caberea Weaver, Mudcats catcher Jose Sibrian allowed a passed ball, allowing Samil Polanco to score to give the Ballers a 3-2 lead. Later in the bat, Weaver lined a pitch into right-center field, scoring Glass to give Kannapolis a 4-2 cushion. Three batters later, Smelley and Gladney both drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks, allowing Victor Torres and James Beard to cross the plate. Finally, Polanco tallied his first hit of the night, a two-RBI single to left field, scoring Atwood and Smelley to complete the fun eighth inning of offense at 8-2 Kannapolis.
RHP Angel Acevedo (W, 2-2) tossed the eighth and ninth innings for the Cannon Ballers, running into a little bit of trouble in the form of Mudcats offense. Luis Silva added an RBI double, followed by a Mendez RBI single, pulling Carolina closer at 8-5, however Acevedo closed the door late, helping Kannapolis earn victory number four in a row.
The two sides will face off in the series finale at Atrium Health Ballpark on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. for Super Splash Day, Part 2. RHP Jared Kelley (0-4, 4.36 ERA) will make his second start of 2022 versus Carolina, while the Mudcats will send out RHP Alexander Cornielle (4-7, 4.16 ERA) for the second time this week.
Fans can purchase tickets for any upcoming home games at kcballers.com or at the F&M Bank Box Office located at Atrium Health Ballpark.
