Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
While rain came down for most of the evening, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans got back on track with a 7-3 win over the Columbia Fireflies in the series finale. The Pelicans earned the series split, continuing their stretch of not falling in a six-game set this season. They improved to 55-26 on the season and 8-7 in the second half. The Fireflies dropped to 29-52 and an 11-4 second-half record.
Nine hits powered the Myrtle Beach lineup with Matt Warkentin (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI, BB) leading the charge with an RBI single and two-run double. Malcom Quintero (2-4, RBI) also brought in a run with a double and Ezequiel Pagan (2-4, 3 R, BB) extended his hitting streak to 13 with a pair of singles.
After allowing a season-high 18 runs last night, the Pelicans sacrificed only three runs off five hits as reliever Tyler Santana (7-0) remained undefeated on the season. Santana tossed 3 1/3 innings with one earned run off two hits and two walks. Porter Hodge started with just under five innings and two runs, one earned off three hits and four walks.
The Fireflies were held to going just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position as RBIs went to Jean Ramirez (1-5, RBI) and Gary Camarillo (1-3, 2B, RBI, R).
Five different pitchers were used by Columbia with reliever Ryan Hennen (2-2) taking the loss after allowing three runs, two earned in his 2 1/3 while striking out five. Starter Frank Mozzicato struck out four and walked another four with two hits allowed for two unearned runs in his 3 2/3 innings.
For the third straight game, the Fireflies scored in the first inning. Hodge threw a wild pitch with runners on second and third to score Daniel Vazquez.
The Fireflies added on with another run in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third and one out, Camarillo hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Dayton Dooney to put Columbia up 2-0.
Myrtle Beach got on the board with a run in the third. Following a double to left field, Josue Huma stole third base during Juan Mora's at-bat. The throw from catcher Omar Hernandez went wild down the line as Huma came in to score.
The Pelicans tied it in their half of the fourth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jacob Wetzel grounded out Vazquez at short. With Pagan coming in to score, the ball was dropped at second by Dooney to make everyone safe.
The deciding inning was the sixth as the Birds plated three runs to take the lead. Warkentin lined a single to left field to score Pagan from second as the Pelicans led 3-2. Quintero lined a double to left field to score another run and move runners to second and third. Wetzel finished it off with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Warkentin as Myrtle Beach left the inning up 5-2.
Warkentin finished off the scoring for the Pelicans with a two-run double with two outs in the top of the seventh.
Columbia scored for the final time in the bottom of the seventh as Camarillo doubled to begin the inning and scored on Camarillo's single to make it 7-3 Pelicans.
Myrtle Beach will return home to start a six-game set against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers with first pitch on Tuesday slated for 7:05 p.m.
