Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Columbia Fireflies scored six runs in the first inning and things didn't look better from there as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped their third game of the series 18-2 on Saturday night. The loss drops the Pelicans to 54-26 with a 7-7 record in the second half. It also snaps their series winning streak at seven straight. Columbia improved to 29-51 with an 11-3 second-half record.
Batting cleanup, Ezequiel Pagan (1-4, HR, RBI) was a bright spot for the Pelicans' lineup with a solo homer in the seventh. Felix Stevens (1-4, RBI) also brought in a run on a groundout.
A season-high six pitchers allowed 17 earned runs off 15 hits and 13 walks as starter Jose Miguel Gonzalez (6-1) dropped his first game of the year. Gonzalez was shy of making it out of the first inning with six runs, five earned off three hits, and two walks while hitting two batters in the opening frame.
Five Columbia hitters posted multi-hit performances with Carter Jensen (3-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB) leading the group with three hits. Dayton Dooney (1-5, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB) and Gary Camarillo (2-5, HR, 4 RBI, BB) smashed home runs in the winning effort.
The Fireflies used just two pitchers with starter Ben Kudrna (1-3) taking the win in his five innings. Kudrna allowed one earned run off four hits and three strikeouts. Wander Arias earned his first save of the year by pitching the final four innings with one earned run off three hits and a walk.
Columbia set the tone with six runs in the opening frame. With runners on second and third and one out, Jensen worked a walk on a wild pitch by Gonzalez to score Jean Ramirez for the game's first run. After Gonzalez got a strikeout for the second out, Guillermo Quintana was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gonzalez hit the next batter in Kyle Hayes to move everybody up and put the Fireflies in front 2-0. Camarillo followed with a single to left field as two more runs came in. Joshua Rivera closed out the scoring with a single to right field with two more runs scoring as the Fireflies left the first inning up 6-0.
Two more runs scored for Columbia in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Jensen singled and Enrique Valdez hit a double to bring him home for another run. Valdez went to third on a throwing error by Pagan in left and scored on Quintana's infield single to short.
The bottom of the third inning started rough for relief pitcher Frankie Scalzo as he walked the first batter then gave up a home run to Dooney to left field for a 10-0 lead. Yovanny Cabrera came out of the bullpen as the Pelicans' third pitcher and gave up an RBI single to Quintana later in the inning.
Myrtle Beach got on the board in the top of the fourth as Stevens grounded out with runners on the corners to bring in Kevin Made.
The runs kept coming for Columbia in the bottom of the fourth as Jensen hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score the Fireflies' 12th run of the game.
Columbia scored four runs in their half of the sixth as Jensen singled to left-center with runners on second and third to plate one. Valdez followed with a single to bring in the runner from third. Later in the inning, Hayes singled with the bases loaded to score the third run of the inning and the Fireflies went up 16-1 after Camarillo struck out on a wild pitch to score Valdez from third.
Pagan took the second pitch of the seventh inning out of the ballpark to right field for his eighth home run of the season as the Pelicans trailed 16-2.
Camarillo put the finishing touches on with a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the eighth.
The series will conclude on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. with the Fireflies leading 3-2.
