Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (July7, 2008) - Brockton Rox 1B Jason Colson homered twice, and C Josh Vander Hey also went deep to give RHP John Kelly all the offense he needed to win his first game since May 30th. The Rox defeated the Worcester Tornadoes 5-1 on Monday night at Campanelli Stadium and split the four-game series.

Kelly took the league's best ERA (1.51) into Monday night's game, having gone winless since starting the season 2-0. He was brilliant from the start, cruising through 6.1 innings before allowing his first hit of the game. Kelly allowed a single run in the eighth inning and left after allowing the lone run on two hits while walking three and striking out eight in the game.

Rox 1B Jason Colson hit two home runs in the game, giving him four in the last three contests with eight RBIs. He started the second inning with a solo shot to left field which gave the Rox a 1-0 advantage. Three batters later, C Josh Vander Hey followed up with a two-run blast of his own; a line drive that ricocheted off the aerial billboards beyond the dugouts in left field. Colson's second home run came as the leadoff man in the sixth inning. Brockton added an insurance run in the eighth inning on DH Francisco Lebron's sacrifice fly.

With the exception of the three home runs, Worcester starter RHP Alex Pena was strong throughout the night. He allowed only five hits (three home runs) and two walks with two strikeouts in seven innings of work. The loss dropped his season record to 0-2. He was making just his second start in six appearances this season.

Brockton has a day off on Tuesday before travelling to New Jersey late Tuesday night for an 11:05 AM game on Wednesday morning against the New Jersey Jackals. Brockton will send LHP Rolando Viera (1-5, 3.62 ERA) to the mound on Wednesday against Jackals RHP Tom Atlee (1-0, 4.74 ERA).
