Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Brockton, MA - Rox ace righthander John Kelly was magnificent and Brockton used three home runs to take the series finale from Worcester, 5-1, at Campanelli Stadium on Monday night.
Brockton jumped on top with a 3-run third inning as Jason Colson homered for the third consecutive game, a solo shot, and then three batters later, Josh Vander Hey stroked a 2-run homer to left. Colson added his second solo home run of the night in the sixth to give the Rox their fourth run of the contest. A fifth Rox run crossed the plate in the eighth via Francisco Lebron's sacrifice fly.
In both the third and seventh innings, the Tornadoes had 2-men on and just 1-out against Brockton starter John Kelly, but were not able to take advantage. Worcester was able to end the shutout bid in the eighth on Kelly's second wild pitch of the season. The eighth ended when Scott Grimes struck out looking with B.J. Weed aboard second. Grimes went 0-for-4 on the night, snapping his 10-game hitting streak and his season-long 40-game on-base streak.
Kelly (3-3), the league leader coming into the night with a 1.51 ERA, was able to even up his record as he went eight innings allowing just the one run on only two hits while striking out eight and walking three. Kelly took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but Chris Colabello ended the no-no bid with a clean one-out single to left. Rox closer Jerry Dunn came in for the ninth, in a non-save situation, and struck out the side to end the game.
Tornadoes' starter Alex Pena (0-2) struggled with the long ball, as the Rox hit three off of him, but he did turn in a solid start. In seven innings, Pena gave up four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Pena, though, has now allowed nine home runs in just 27.1 innings pitched. Eddie Pena pitched the eighth for Worcester and allowed Brockton's fifth run after three singles and a sacrifice fly.
Worcester will enjoy its first scheduled off-day in over three weeks on Tuesday and then will return to action at Nashua for a 7:05 p.m. contest on Wednesday night. Worcester will send righty Junior Guerrero to the mound to take on the Pride's right-handed Jarrett Stawarz.
The Tornadoes return home on Thursday, July 10 to conclude the first half with a 4-game series against the Nashua Pride. Thursday, June 10 will be a doubleheader starting at 6:05 p.m. Friday, July 11 will be the Tornadoes' third postgame fireworks show of the year. The series and first half concludes on Saturday, July 12, which will be "Going Green Night," sponsored by Waste Management and Sony.
