Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - Colorado Rapids Soccer Club announced today the acquisition of U.S. Men's National Team forward and Generation Adidas player Jonathan Lewis from New York City FC in exchange for $650,000 in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) in 2020 and a 2020 international roster spot.
"We are thrilled to welcome Jonathan to Colorado," said Rapids Executive Vice President & General Manager, Pádraig Smith. "He is one of the best young attacking talents in the United States, a dynamic game changer with the potential to develop into an elite level attacker in MLS. His age, character and skillset fit perfectly with the type of player we want to bring to Colorado and with the plans we have for the future of our club."
Entering his third year in MLS, Lewis was NYCFC's first pick, third overall, in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, and now joins Colorado off the heels of his first international caps for his home country. Earlier this year, Lewis was called up into the USMNT team January Camp and made his senior international debut for the U.S. that same month in a 3-0 friendly win against Panama. Lewis delivered two assists in two consecutive senior team appearances against Panama and Costa Rica. He now has four total caps for the Stars and Stripes.
In 2018, Lewis played 14 matches and scored one goal and contributed three assists across 219 minutes. During his rookie season, Lewis would score two goals and log one assist in 11 appearances.
The Atlanta, Georgia native played collegiately at the University of Akron and in that timeframe he would be named the 2016 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year after recording two goals and 12 assists. After a successful first year with Akron, Lewis was called in to the U.S. U-20 camp in preparation of the 2017 Concacaf U-20 Championship, where Team USA would be crowned champions. Lewis would strike a goal and assist another in a 4-1 group stage win over Saint Kitts and Nevis.
The Rapids are home this weekend to face Rocky Mountain rivals Real Salt Lake on May 11 with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. MT. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased by going to https://www.coloradorapids.com/tickets.
