Colorado Eagles News Release

LAST WEEK IN REVIEW

Tuesday, March 20; Rookie Defenseman Chiarot Recalled to IceCaps

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets & the AHL's St. John's IceCaps, announced today that defenseman Ben Chiarot (pronounced: sh-rot) has been re-assigned to the IceCaps' roster. The rookie has recorded 13 points (6-7-13) and 13 penalty minutes in 24 games with the Eagles this season after being sent down to the team in late January.

Tuesday, March 20; Pair of Late Goals Lead Las Vegas to Win

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Las Vegas Wranglers scored goals in bunches to top the Colorado Eagles, 5-3. The home team built an early 2-0 lead with tallies 21 seconds apart and emerged from a tied game late with another pair 70 seconds apart in handing the Eagles a loss as they begin a four-game road trip that will take place in three different cities over five days.

Wednesday, March 21; Eagles Sign Amateur Forward Teegan Moore

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles of the ECHL announced today that they've signed amateur forward Teegan Moore. The 5-foot-11-inch, 200-pound native of Thompson, Manitoba just completed his fifth season at the University of Calgary.

In his collegiate career, he registered 54 points (26-28-54) and 173 penalty minutes in 118 games. Prior to his time with the Dinos, Moore spent five seasons in Canada's Western Hockey League (the first four and a half with the Brandon Wheat Kings, the last half with the Portland Winterhawks), recording 111 points (43-68-111) and 363 PIMs in 330 total games.

Wednesday, March 21; Secondary Scoring Leads Eagles to Big Win in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Colorado Eagles edged the Bakersfield Condors, 3-2, strengthening their grasp on home ice advantage in the upcoming playoffs while at the same time knocking the Condors out of playoff contention. In a game that saw a combined 83 shots, the Eagles got their three goals from players with a combined seven goals on the season heading into the game.

Friday, March 23; Eagles Sign Amateur Forward Jordan Baker

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles of the ECHL announced today that they've signed amateur forward Jordan Baker. Baker joins defenseman Isaac Smeltzer & fellow forward Teegan Moore as amateurs signed by the team in the past 10 days.

Baker joins Colorado's roster after completing his collegiate career at Michigan Tech (the same alma mater as Eagles captain Riley Nelson). In four seasons with the Huskies (his 2010-11 season was wiped out by injury), the 5-foot-7-inch, 170-pound forward registered 82 points (38-44-82) in 146 games. In his sophomore season, he led his team in scoring and was named their Most Valuable Player.

Prior to attending Michigan Tech, the Chestermere, Alberta native played three seasons with the Olds Grizzlys of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he tallied 109 points (56-53-109) in 122 games, twice being selected as an AJHL South Division All-Star. That goal scoring and point production helped his Canadian Pacific U-17 team take home a silver medal during the 2005 World Junior Hockey Championships.

Friday, March 23; Eagles Score Three Unanswered in 3-2 Shootout Win Over Grizzlies; Jones Picks Up 30th Win of Season, Tying League Lead

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - The Colorado Eagles came back from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat the Utah Grizzlies, 3-2, in a shootout. Kyle Jones stopped 39 of 41 shots before turning aside all five Utah shooters in the shootout, picking up his 30th win of the season, which ties Las Vegas' Joe Fallon for most in the ECHL.

Saturday, March 24; Eagles Add Amateur Goaltender Damien Ketlo

LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles of the ECHL announced today that they've signed amateur goalie Damien Ketlo to an amateur tryout contract. Ketlo is a 6-foot-1-inch, 195-pound netminder from Fort Fraser, British Columbia. The left-handed catching goalie just completed his fourth season in Canada's Western Hockey League, the first three with the Regina Pats and this past season with the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Saturday, March 24; Eagles Get Into Penalty Trouble in 6-1 Loss at Utah

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah. - In what could end up being an opening round playoff match-up, the Colorado Eagles fell to the Utah Grizzlies, 6-1, in a feisty affair that saw 77 penalty minutes doled out by referee Mike McBain . Utah blew the game open by scoring five unanswered goals, three on the power play, two of which came on 5-on-3 advantages.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Tuesday, March 27 & Wednesday, March 28; Eagles End Home Slate With Pair Against Reign

Colorado enters the final week of its first regular season in the ECHL, needing just two points to claim home ice advantage in the first round of the upcoming Kelly Cup playoffs. They'll have their hands full earning those points against the Ontario Reign in the final two home games on their season slate as the Reign are within striking distance of the top seed in the Western Conference (just four points behind Alaska). The Eagles are 4-4-1 against Ontario this season, including 2-2-1 at the BEC.

Friday, March 30 & Saturday, March 31; Colorado Closes Out First ECHL Season in Sin City

The Eagles will close out their first ECHL season with a pair of games against the Las Vegas Wranglers, who open the week just three points behind Ontario and 11 points ahead of Colorado for 3rd place in the Western Conference. The Eagles are 3-6-1 against Las Vegas this season, including 2-3-0 on the road. While that road record may not look great, it's more impressive when given the fact that the Wranglers have lost just seven home games in regulation this season, and Colorado has accounted for nearly 30% of them.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

EVEN ALL AROUND - The Eagles have played the Reign nine times so far this season and have a record of 4-4-1 to show for it. That includes a split of 2-2-1 at the BEC and 2-2-0 in California. Each team has tallied 15 goals when playing in Ontario, but the Reign have out-scored the Eagles 27-22 in Colorado.

TWO-POINTS ADVANTAGE - The Eagles are just two points away from securing at least the 4th seed in the Western Conference, and the home ice advantage that comes with it in the opening round of the upcoming Kelly Cup playoffs. Likewise, if the Stockton Thunder fail to get two of their six remaining possible points, the Eagles will lock up the 4th seed by default.

A FOURTH SCORE - The Eagles' high-flying offense hasn't been getting much altitude lately as they haven't scored more than three goals in a game since March 6th, a span of 10 contests. In that time, they've scored 19 total goals (an average of less than two per game) and have been held to just one score five times. Colorado is 25-3-4 when scoring four or more goals.

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? - Three of Colorado's premier point-producers have been semi-silent lately. Riley Nelson has registered a point in just two of his past nine games, Kevin Ulanski has registered a point in three of his past 10 games, and Aaron Schneekloth has registered a point in just two of his past six games. In the nine games since March 8 (prior to the 5-game set against Alaska), amateur Teegan Moore -- who's only played the past three games -- trails only Joey Sides in points on the team.

ON THE NEGATIVE SIDE - Here's one of those cases where a plus/minus rating doesn't paint an accurate picture. Joey Sides led the ECHL in plus/minus in February with a +13 rating through 12 games, but despite continued strong play -- he leads the team this month with 12 points -- he's registered a positive rating just twice in 13 games in March (just a +1 both times). Overall this month he's recorded a negative rating eight times and is sitting at -7 overall.

NEW BLOOD - The Eagles have signed three amateurs over the past two weeks, and more are likely to join the lineup before playoff rosters are set. Forward Teegan Moore has made the biggest impact on the score sheet so far (recording four points in three games), but defenseman Isaac Smeltzer has also had his own impact on the blue line. Forward Jordan Baker has no points in two games, and goalie Damien Ketlo has yet to see any action in net.

POSSIBLE PLAYOFF FAMILIAR FOE - If the Eagles don't end up facing the Stockton Thunder in the opening round of the playoffs, they'll take on the Utah Grizzlies. That match-up could be interesting for many reasons. The teams met 13 times in the regular season, the most Colorado faced any opponent. The season series saw many twists and turns; the teams began extremely evenly matched before the Eagles rang up six straight wins. However, the Grizzlies got some pay-back in the final meeting last Saturday, topping Colorado, 6-1.
