Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (40-49) completed their sweep of the Sioux City Explorers (45-44) with 3-2 win on Mike Coles' walk-off single on Thursday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo, ND.

Mike Coles only needed one hit to leave his mark on the RedHawks' best winning streak of the season. Coles was called upon to pinch hit in the bottom of the tenth inning with two outs and runners on second and third. Prior to that at bat, he was 6-for-6 over the first two games of the series against Sioux City. Coles delivered a game-winning single to stay perfect at the plate for the series and give the RedHawks a perfect, six-game home stand.

Sioux City entered this series with the RedHawks winning six of their last seven games and in the middle of the wild card chase. Today, they came to the ball park dead set on preventing the RedHawks from sweeping them.

That desire shined brightly throughout the game and gave it a playoff feel. T.J. Bohn and Mike Murphy, who had both reached on base hits, pulled off a double steal. Bohn scored shortly after that on a single by Brian Bistagne. Then, the Explorers used a safety squeeze to bring in Murphy and give themselves a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Kyle Nichols took a different approach by blasting a leadoff home run to left-center field bringing the RedHawks within one run. The 3,749 fans in attendance didn't have to wait long for the RedHawks to score again as they tied it up in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Carlo Cota.

After that run, the starting pitchers put the game in lockdown mode and neither team scored until the deciding run in the tenth inning. Jake Laber pitched 7.1 giving up two runs (earned) on eight hits and two walks while striking out four. Richard Salazar tossed seven innings while also giving up two runs (earned). Neither starter factored into the decision.

William Jackel (1-1) picked up the win for the RedHawks. Jackel got the last out of the ninth inning and pitched the entire tenth inning. Emiliano Fruto (2-3) took the loss for the Explorers.

Kyle Nichols stayed hot for the RedHawks going 3-for-5 with a home run. Retherford continued to thrive as well, picking up his fourth multi-hit game in a row.

The RedHawks hit the road to take on the Saints and the Goldeyes Friday morning. Fargo-Moorhead will return to Newman Outdoor Field for their final home stand of the year against the Kansas City T-Bones on Saturday, August 27. Game time is 7:02 pm. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 701-235-6161, online at www.fmredhawks.com, or at the Ticket Office during business hours.
