Two-Out Deluge Sends AirHogs to Third Straight Loss

Grand Prairie AirHogs News Release

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- If a baseball game was only played to two outs instead of three, the Grand Prairie AirHogs would have beaten the Fort Worth Cats 6-1 on Wednesday. As the rules stand though, it was the Cats going 13-for-21 with two outs to score 10 runs in an 11-6 triumph in front of 1,406 fans at QuikTrip Park.

Fort Worth (41-46), winners of seven straight games, got runs in seven of their nine innings, and jumped out to a 4-0 lead on four, two-out, two-strike RBI hits in the first three innings against John Brownell (10-4).

Former AirHog Daniel Schmidt (2-0) worked around three baserunners during that span, before a solo home run from Joey Gomes leading off the fourth got Grand Prairie (55-34) on the board, and the Airhogs got two more in the fifth to cut the deficit to one.

But the Cats got one more in the sixth on another two-out rally with a single by Marcos Rodriguez, who stole second and scored on Kelley Gulledge's RBI single.

Gulledge, who went 5-for-5 with three RBIs, was part of a five-run seventh against the AirHogs' bullpen that appeared to put the game out of reach, before John Alonso hit his team-leading 11th home run of the year in the bottom of the seventh to pull Grand Prairie to within four again. But unlike the Cats, who went 10-for-22 with runners in scoring position, Grand Prairie could not get the big hits they needed, finishing 1-for-11 with runners at second or third.

After Alonso's home run, the offense totally dried up, as Robert Manuel came on and retired eight of the nine men he faced to finish the game off, clinching the Cats' first series win against the AirHogs in four tries this year.
