Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

GARY, In.---The Captains final evening in the midwest was not without its highlights---an appearance by hot dog eating champion Kobiyashi, a near-brawl, a disputed ninth-inning call and a three-for-four four RBI night for Andres Rodriguez as Shreveport-Bossier topped Gary SouthShore 11-9. The Captains ended the six-game set in Gary with a 3-3 series split.

Mike Provencher led off the game by drawing a walk. He stole second base and then took third on a throwing error by RailCats catcher Craig Maddox. After a Robert Perry walk, Bryan Sabatella scored Provencher with a base hit. Chad Gabriel added a two-out base hit to score Perry. Gabriel then came home on a Rodriguez double, making it 3-0.

A Brad Boyer RBI single followed by a one-run double by Christian Guerrero made it 3-2 Captains after one. Gary would tie the game on a Craig Maddox RBI single in the second.

A four-run fifth would put Shreveport-Bossier back on top. Palmer Karr Jr. and Gabriel each had RBI singles. Karr would come home on an error by RailCats shortstop Brian Kolb. Jonathan Johnson added a sacrifice fly to make it 7-3 Captains.

With the score 7-4 in the sixth, Karr singled with two outs. Gary reliever Baron Short hit Gabriel with a pitch to put two men on. Jeremy Hauer came on to pitch and Rodriguez welcomed him to the game with a mamoth home run to left field, his 13th of the year and second of the series, to put Shreveport-Bossier up 10-4.

But the RailCats would not go quietly. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Mike Massaro hit his 12th triple of the year, a RailCats record, to clear the bases and bring Gary within three runs. Captains hurler Jameson Maj hit the next batter, Brad Boyer, with a pitch and the benches cleared momentarily before both benches were warned and cooler heads prevailed.

Mike Rohde's RBI double in the seventh made it 10-8 in favor of Shreveport-Bossier. But the Captains would add a ninth-inning insurance run when Brian Peterson sent James Baker's first pitch of the game over the left field fence for his fifth long ball of the year to make it 11-8.

In the bottom of the ninth, Toddric Johnson singled off Hector Carrasco (Sv, 1) to start things off. After Brian Kolb drew a walk, Rohde hit a ground ball right in front of home plate. Peterson fielded it and turned a 2-5-3 double play. However, the umpire's convened and ruled it a foul ball, prolonging the at bat. Rohde would reach on a fielder's choice and Craig Maddox's grounder to first scored Johnson to make it a two-run game. Chris Carrara was then hit by a pitch to put the tying run on base but Carrasco would strike out Adam Klein to end the game.

Captains starter Robert Bono (W, 1-2) got his first win as a member of Shreveport-Bossier. He lasted five innings, giving up six hits and four runs (three earned) while walking two and striking out two. RailCats starter Alain Quijano (L, 6-5), who defeated Bono and the Captains in the first game of the series on Aug. 12, allowed seven runs (six earned) and eight hits in four innings while walking five and striking out two.

Gabriel was 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Karr added a 2-for-4 night with two runs and an RBI. For the RailCats in the loss, Maddox was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in. Massaro was 2-for-4 with a run and four RBIs of his own.

With the win, Shreveport-Bossier improves to 41-47, 7.5 games behind Wichita in the wild card race with 12 games remaining.
