Columbus Clippers News Release
The Clippers newest pitcher, right-hander Paolo Espino was named International League Pitcher of the Week on the strength of his dramatic victory, Saturday, over the Louisville Bats.
Espino threw seven shutout innings for first-place Columbus against second-place Louisville. He allowed three hits, two walks and struck out five.
Paolo was caught by his first cousin Damaso Espino. Both are natives of Panama and their fathers were in the stands watching the game in Huntington Park.
Called up to Columbus from Akron on August 3, Paolo is 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA. The 23-year-old is in his fourth professional season.
The Clippers begin a four-game series with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (New York Yankees) at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. The series is important to postseason play. The Yankees lead the North Division by 6.5 games over Buffalo. The Clippers have a 2.5 game lead over Louisville in their tough battle in the West Division.
Outfielder/first baseman Jordan Brown will rejoin the Clippers today and will be a big boost for the team. With a strong finish, Brown could not only own the highest career batting average in Clippers history (500 AB) but the highest batting average of any Columbus player in over 70 years!
Another interesting note... if Carlos Carrasco wins tonight's game, he will become the first Clippers pitcher to win 10 or more games in a season in the past five years.
The last Clippers' hurler to post double digit victories was Pete Munro (10-7) in 2005.
Hope to see you this week at Huntington Park... the weather is perfect! Tonight is City Barbeque Buck-A-Bone Night... come hungry!
