Syracuse Mets News Release
Louisville, KY - The Syracuse Chifs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost by the score of 8-5 to the Louisville Bats on Tuesday night at Louisville Slugger Field. Syracuse starter Shairon Martis went just 4 1/3 innings giving up nine hits, seven earned runs, walked two batters and struck out two.
Syracuse (64-60) fell behind for the fifth straight game on the road trip when the Bats came to the plate in the first. Martis allowed the first five runners to reach base and the first three of them scored. Louisville led 3-0 after one.
The Chiefs did not score on Louisville (69-54) until the fourth inning against starter Ben Jukich. With two down, Leonard Davis roped a two-run triple to score Wilson Ramos and Chase Lambin and pull Syracuse within one at 3-2.
In the bottom half of the inning, though, Louisville plated two more runs on an RBI single by Yonder Alonso. He finished with a team high 3 RBI as did Wladimir Balentien who hit a two run homer in the fifth to push the Louisville lead to 7-2.
The sixth inning saw the Chiefs score one more run as Chase Lambin knocked in Seth Bynum. Lambin was hitting just .071 over his last ten games before Tuesday night's action. In the bottom of the sixth, the Bats plated another run on a sacrifice fly from Balentien.
Syracuse was down 8-3 heading into the eighth when Lambin knocked in another run to make it 8-4. Pinch hitter Carlos Maldonado added one more run in the ninth to make the final score 8-5.
The Chiefs were thwarted from winning three straight games for the eighth consecutive time. They have not won three straight since June 18th-19th in a stretch that featured a doubleheader against Gwinnett. Syracuse is now 5.5 games back of Wild Card leading Louisville.
On Wednesday, the two teams will play the second game of their four game set. Lefty Matt Chico (6-7, 3.92) is scheduled to throw for Syracuse against righthander Chad Reineke (9-7, 3.47) for Louisville. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
