Durham Bulls News Release

(Fort Mill, SC) Richard De Los Santos (13-5) tied Durham's single-season Triple-A record for wins in a season, and Elliot Johnson backed him with a 4-for-4 two-homer night in a 6-2 victory on Tuesday. Durham's magic number to clinch the South Division title is five.

De Los Santos won his sixth straight start, scattering nine hits and a walk over six innings. Leading 4-0 in the sixth with runners at first and second and one out, he committed an error on a potential double-play ball, loading the bases. Alejandro De Aza doubled into the right field corner, making it a 4-2 game. De Los Santos settled down and got Buck Coats to pop up in foul ground to third baseman Angel Chavez, and struck out Dayan Viciedo to end the sixth.

De Los Santos now has won six straight starts, and leads the IL in victories with 13. He shares Durham's single-season record for wins in Triple-A, initially set by Dave Eiland (1998), and also accomplished by Mitch Talbot (2007 and 2008).

Elliot Johnson helped ensure the win, hitting his second homer of the game with one out in the seventh for a 5-2 lead, and then doubled in another insurance run in the ninth. His 4-for-4 night keyed a 14-hit attack.

The combination of Dale Thayer, Brian Shouse and Winston Abreu didn't allow a runner past first over the final three innings.

The win, couple with Gwinnett's 4-2 home loss to Norfolk reduced Durham's magic number to five to win a fourth straight South Division title. The Bulls now have a 15.5 game lead with 20 games left.

Durham (76-47) will seek to sweep the three-game series against Charlotte on Wednesday at 7:15 with Aneury Rodriguez against Carlos Torres in a battle of righties. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 7 pm.
