G-Braves Fall in Homestand Finale, 4-2

The Norfolk Tides beat the Gwinnett Braves 4-2 on Tuesday night in their series finale, splitting a two game set at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. Gwinnett was victimized by a season-high 5 errors that led to their demise. The G-Braves (61-63) fell to 15.5 games behind International League South leaders Durham in second place, and 8.5 games within Wild Card-leaders Louisville. Norfolk (58-67) remains in last place in the IL South, 19.0 games back.

It Was Over When: The G-Braves tied the game in the bottom of the 7th inning 2-2, but the very next frame saw the squad commit 2 errors that led to the winning runs in the top of the 8th.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starting RHP Kenshin Kawakami went 4.0 IP, allowing 2 R/1 ER on 2 hits, including a home run in his longest outing for Gwinnett since being optioned from Atlanta on 8/7. He also struck out 3 and walked 1 batter. LHP Eric O'Flaherty went 2.0 IP of scoreless ball, striking out the side in the 6th inning in his longest of 3 appearances since coming to Gwinnett on his ML rehab from Atlanta on 8/13. RHP Stephen Marek (1-1) was charged with his first loss of the year after giving up 2 R (none earned) in the 8th inning.

At the plate: DH Barbaro Canizares went 1-for-4, dropping his season average to .336 but remained well in the lead for the IL batting crown. Right fielder Brent Clevlen went 1-for-4 with an RBI in his first appearance of the homestand as he was out with a sore back. Center fielder Nate McLouth was 1-for-1 and made a spectacular catch before departing the game in the 3rd inning with a sore shin.

The opposition:

On the Mound: Norfolk starting LHP Mike Hinckley went 3.2 IP, yielding just 1 run and no runs while walking 2 and striking out 2 batters. Kam Mickolio (3-2) got the win despite a blown save and allowing 2 R/ER in 1.1 IP. Dennis Sarfate notched his 16th save of the season.

At the plate: Third baseman Scott Moore was 1-for-4 with 2 RBI, while right fielder Lou Montanez finished 1-for-4 with a homer and an RBI.

On Deck: Gwinnett has an off day tomorrow, and then hits the road for the first game of a four-game road trip at the division rival Charlotte Knights at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday night. The G-Braves will send RHP Brandon Beachy (2-0, 3.27 ERA) to the mound against RHP Brandon Hynick (1-3, 6.81 ERA) for the Knights. The game will be broadcast on the radio at WDUN-550 AM.

Etc: Third baseman Wes Timmons, out for three straight games with a left oblique strain, will undergo an MRI tomorrow.
