Clippers Down IronPigs to Kick off Road Trip
June 28, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release
Behind strong pitching from southpaw Ross Detwiler (2-4) and two RBI performances from Jesus Aguilar and Michael Choice, the Columbus Clippers (41-37) topped Lehigh Valley (45-33) 5-3 on Monday night at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA., in front of 7,685 fans.
Aguilar's sacrifice fly to deep center plated Abraham Almonte to give the Clippers an early 1-0 lead right off the bat.
The RBI was Aguilar's team leading 41st of the season.
IronPigs first baseman Darin Ruf's solo home run to left in the bottom of the second inning tied the game.
Choice's fourth long ball of the campaign in the fourth frame, a two-run shot to left, made it a 3-1 game and Aguilar's two-run single to left the next inning extended the lead to four, giving the Clippers plenty of offense to pick up the win.
Lehigh Valley scored two runs in the seventh inning, but they would come no closer to tying Columbus the rest of the night.
Detwiler worked seven and 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out seven.
IronPigs starter in right-hander Ben Lively (3-1) suffered his first loss in 2016 after going a combined 10-0 with Lehigh Valley and class-AA Reading. He went six innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits while walking one and punching out four.
Shawn Armstrong collected his fourth save of the season in working the ninth.
The Clippers and IronPigs will throw down in part two of their three game series tomorrow night from Allentown at 7:05 p.m. Righty Adam Plutko (1-1, 3.09 ERA) will lead the charge for Columbus against southpaw James Russell (2-3, 5.01 ERA) for Lehigh Valley.
