SWB Game Notes

June 28, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The red-hot RailRiders picked up their league-best 13th shutout victory with a 5-0 blanking of the Chiefs on Monday night. The RailRiders posted their 15th win in 20 games while the Chiefs lost to SWB for the first time at NBT Bank Stadium this year.

TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: SWB is the only IL squad with double-digit shutouts on the year and leads the loop with its 3.12 ERA. Tommy Phelps' hurlers also rank among the IL's best in: WHIP (2nd, 1.21), H/9 IP (T-1st, 8.0), K/9IP (2nd, 8.4), K:BB ratio (2nd, 2.89) and saves (4th, 23). SWB is on pace to post 24 shutouts, which would shatter the franchise record of 15 set by the 2003 Red Barons. Last year's Rochester Red Wings logged 21 shutouts, the most by an IL squad since Tidewater's staff fired 21 shutouts in 1975.

IT'S EASY BEING GREEN: Starter Chad Green (6-6) posted his second straight win and scoreless outing with six frames of three-hit ball. He has not allowed a run over his last 17 innings, lowering his ERA to a league-best 1.54. He also ranks among the IL's best in WHIP (3rd, 0.98) and batting average against (T-4th, .207). He has dominated right-handed hitters, holding them to slashes of .147/.225/.194/.419. Nine of Green's last 10 starts have been quality.

JUDGMENT DAY: Aaron Judge connected on his IL-best 16th home run and worked a walk. He leads the team and ranks among the IL leaders in RBIs (T-3rd, 46), slugging (4th, .492), extra-base hits (2nd, 31), total bases (2nd, 139) and runs scored (T-2nd, 48). He saw his batting average bottom out at .221 after an 0-for-3 day versus Columbus on June 2 during an 0-for-24 tailspin. Since then he has reached base in 21 of 23, going 31-for-83 with nine homers, 21 RBIs, 18 walks and 28 runs scored. In that time he has slashed .373/.495/.783/1.278. His season-long OBP has risen by 67 points (.285-.352) with over half of his overall walk total coming in the 23-game run. He now ranks among the IL's best in walks with 34 (T-9th). He has hit nine homers over his last 15 games played, seven in his last nine and four in his last five.

GREATEST WEEK EVER: Yesterday, the IL bestowed Batter of the Week honors upon Judge for June 20-26. On the week he paced the circuit with seven extra-base hits, 29 total bases, a 1.208 slugging percentage, and five home runs to go along with a .458 batting average and nine RBIs.

KING IN THE NORTH: Losses by Lehigh Valley and Rochester last night, in conjunction with the RailRiders' win, has SWB in first place all by itself at a league-best 46-32. The IronPigs and Red Wings co-own the circuit's second-best record, 1.0 game back at 45-33. Fourth-place Buffalo, which has won seven straight games, would lead either of the other two divisions at 44-34.

ROAD WARRIORS: The RailRiders own the IL's best road record at 25-14. They stand on pace to win 46 games away from NEPA. That would surpass the franchise record of 45 set by Marc Bombard's 2002 Red Barons who won 91 total games with players like Chase Utley, Marlon Byrd, Brett Myers and Joe Roa. At PNC Field, SWB has slashed .254/.315/.386/.701 while scoring 4.00 runs/game. On the road, the team has slashed .271/.344/.421/.765 while scoring 5.03 runs/game.

SOL MAN: Donovan Solano went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. An 0-for-4 day versus Charlotte on June 8 marked the end of a 3-for-39 slump that dropped his average to .259. In 17 games played since, he has gone 25-for-64 with 10 multi-hit games, slashing .391/.426/.609/1.036 to spike his average back up to .290. Solano has posted multiple knocks in five of his last seven.

OFF THE RAILS: When Gary Sanchez catches, the RailRiders have gone 28-15 with a 2.61 ERA...With the team's other three backstops, the team has gone 17-17 with a 3.75 ERA...He leads all ranked IL catchers in caught-stealing efficiency at 39%, nabbing nine men in the slim sum of 23 attempts on the year...Tyler Austin started in right field for the first time all year...Entering 2016, 296 of his 443 pro games came in right...In his first game back with the RailRiders, the recently-demoted Nick Goody struck out six to tie for the most whiffs by an SWB reliever this season...The team also tied its best total strikeout day of the year with 13.
