Clevlen Blasts Three Homers In Four Games
Published on July 16, 2007 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Toledo center fielder Brent Clevlen and Norfolk pitcher Craig Anderson have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period from July 9-15. Both players become the second members of their respective clubs to win an IL weekly award in 2007. Clevlen joins Toledo hurler Virgil Vasquez (April 16-22 & May 28-June 3) while Anderson joins Norfolk outfielder Tike Redman (May 14-20).
Toledo Mud Hens center fielder BRENT CLEVLEN led the International League with three home runs, five extra-base hits, seven RBI, and a 1.267 slugging percentage during the past week. All that damage came in four games during a week that included the Triple-A All-Star break. Clevlen now has four homers on the season, all coming in his last six games since returning from a stint on the disabled list with a broken finger. In the first game back from the break this week, Clevlen smashed two long balls and drove in three runs. He went 5-7 in the Hens' two-game series with IL South leader Richmond, driving in six of Toledo's ten runs. Last night, Clevlen topped off his amazing weekend by collecting three more hits against the Charlotte Knights including a double and another home run. In the four-game stretch, Clevlen hit .533 (8-15) to raise his average on the year from .219 to .248.
23-year-old Brent Clevlen is in his sixth year in the Detroit organization after being selected by the Tigers in the 2nd round of the 2002 draft. In 2005 he was the MVP of the Florida State League after hitting .302 with 18 HR and 102 RBI with Lakeland. Last year he reached the Major Leagues, hitting .282 in 31 games with the Tigers. This is his first season at the Triple-A level. Clevlen is a native of Austin, TX.
On Friday the Norfolk Tides blanked Ottawa 3-0 behind the superb effort of starting pitcher CRAIG ANDERSON. The 6'3" southpaw held the Lynx scoreless for 7.0 innings, striking out five and walking two. He allowed only two hits on the evening (one of which was a bunt single) while lowering his ERA to 3.52 in five starts since being promoted from Double-A Bowie on June 18. Anderson, who was 5-1 in Double-A at the time of his promotion, picked up his second win at the Triple-A level Friday. The seven-inning effort marked his longest outing so far with the Tides. Relievers Jim Hoey and Cory Doyne shut down the Lynx in the 8th and 9th innings to secure the 3-0 win for Norfolk.
26-year-old Craig Anderson is in his second season in the Baltimore organization after being signed as a free agent. Anderson was originally signed by Seattle as a non-drafted free agent in 1999. He pitched for Triple-A Tacoma in 2003-04, posting a combined record of 17-19 before being released by the Mariners. He played in the independent Canadian-American League in 2005 before signing with the Orioles. Anderson is a native of Gosford, Australia.
