Wausau Woodchucks News Release

Madison - The Wisconsin Woodchucks snapped a nine-game losing streak late Friday night as they beat the Madison Mallards 8-7 in a game delayed over an hour by rain. The Woodchucks took the lead early in this contest, as their re-vamped line-up sprung right away. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Garrett Yrigoyen flew out to center field, scoring Cody Regis and giving the ‘Chucks a 1-0 lead. After the Mallards went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning, the ‘Chucks gave up two outs on two pitches in the top of the second. Gabe Feldman, who played left field because of a wide array of injuries to Woodchuck outfielders, bounced a ball toward third base, and beat out an infield single. The third out was recorded one batter later, but Feldman flashed his speed on the infield single, his first hit in the Northwoods League. The rest of the outfield for the Woodchucks was Carlos Escobar, Jr., a catcher, and Derek Peterson, a third baseman. Both Danny Susdorf and Brian Carroll were out of the line-up due to injuries.

The Mallards got on the board in the second when Willie Argo scored on a double by Justin Parr, making it a 1-1 game.

The Woodchucks took the lead back in the top of the third, scoring two runs off of Mallard starter Chris Lamb. Austin Coleman hit a one-out double over the head of the left-fielder Andrew Wasmund and came around to score on an RBI-double by Garrett Yrigoyen. With Yrigoyen on third and Robbie De La Cruz on first after a walk, De La Cruz stole second base, drawing a throw to second. After the throw Yrigoyen broke towards home plate, and the throw from Mike McQuillan was wild, allowing Yrigoyen to score on the error as the Woodchucks took a 3-1 lead.

The Mallards scored two of their own in the third, as they tied the game back up at three. After Andrew Wasmund reached on an error by Peterson, he came around to score on a single by Matt Mirabal. Mirabal advanced to a second on an error by Dimitri De La Fuente and later scored, but both of the runs were unearned to Justin Burns, the Woodchuck starter. Burns, pitching on one day rest, went three innings, allowing only one earned run to go with two unearned runs.

The back-and-forth battle continued in the fourth inning, when each team tacked on a run. The Woodchucks scored their run on Escobar, Jr.'s team-leading seventh home run of the season, and the Mallards scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Barna.

The score would stay tied at four until the Woodchucks batted in the top of the sixth. The ‘Chucks scored four runs in the inning, including RBI-hits by Cody Regis, Austin Coleman, and Dimitri De La Fuente, giving the ‘Chucks an 8-4 lead.

However, in the bottom of the inning, the Mallards cut the ‘Chucks lead back down to one. With two on and two-outs, Matt Mirabal crushed a pitch over the left center field wall, making it an 8-7 game.

To start off the seventh, Anthony Drobnick came on to pitch with the one run lead, and he shut down the Mallards. Drobnick threw three shutout innings, striking out five, as the Woodchucks won 8-7. Drobnick picked up the save, his fourth of the season, and Brock Heerdt got the win, his first.
