Northwoods Wausau Woodchucks

Chucks Close to Breaking Several Records, Clinching Playoff Spot

August 4, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Wausau Woodchucks News Release

WAUSAU - The Wisconsin Woodchucks enter the final nine games of the season with a record of 23-3 in the second half, setting them up to clinch a playoff spot and break several records.

After the "˜Chucks' victory last night and the loss by the Madison Mallards, the Woodchucks' "magic number" is now three games. This means that with any combination of Woodchuck wins and Mallard losses that adds up to three, the Woodchucks will clinch the South Division title. The "˜Chucks could wrap up the South Division as early as Sunday when they face the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters at home at 5:05. The Woodchucks would face the La Crosse Loggers in the first round of the playoffs, starting August 13th.

With a record of 3-6 in their last nine games, the Woodchucks would break a franchise record with 43 wins. The current record is 42 victories in 2010 when the Woodchucks won the second half of the season and fell to the eventual champion Eau Claire Express in the first round of the playoffs. This is the Woodchucks' fourth 40-win season in franchise history which is tied for the second most of all Northwoods League franchises, trailing only the Rochester Honkers with six.

With a record of 6-3 in their last nine games, the Woodchucks would break the Northwoods League record for wins in a half at 28. This record was set by the Alexandria Beetles in the second half of 2011 and tied by the Mankato MoonDogs in the first half of this season.

There are still three more home games for the Woodchucks this season, starting tonight at Athletic Park. The Woodchucks will face the Lakeshore Chinooks tonight at 6:35 and the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Sunday at 5:05. They will wrap up the regular season at home against the Madison Mallards at 5:05 on Sunday, August 12th.
