Wausau Woodchucks News Release
WAUSAU-June 23, 2011-The Wisconsin Woodchucks won the first game of a home-away-away series with the visiting Bullfrogs Thursday night, topping Green Bay 10-7.
In a game delayed one hour due to rain, Richard Klein took the win for the 'Chucks, as Justin Burns notched the save, and Zak Hermans assumed the Bullfrogs' loss.
The 'Chucks posted a monster first inning off Bullfrogs' starter Zak Hermans, as the Woodchucks would score five runs on only two hits.
Danny Susdorf led off the inning with a walk, as Seth Batty followed with a single, and Carlos Escobar walked to load the bases. Cody Regis would then hit an RBI single, before advancing to third on a botched fielders' choice- which scored two runs.
The next two batters, Kyle DeMerritt and Tyler Heineman, would both reach on consecutive fielding errors, scoring another run and putting Shain Stoner on third- setting up Robbie De La Cruz to smash in the inning's fifth run on a sacrifice fly.
The score would remain 5-0, Woodchucks through the next three innings, as 'Chucks starter Richard Klein held a no-hitter through four.
Headed to the bottom of the fourth frame, the 'Chucks would tack on two more runs, as Mike Gerber would reach base on Eau Claire's fourth error, steal second, and score as Carlos Escobar hit a double- before Cody Regis would send in Escobar on a single.
Up 7-0, the Woodchucks pitching staff would allow the Bullfrogs to chip away at their commanding lead, heading into the fifth.
Duncan McAlpine led off the fifth for Green Bay with a single, then advanced on a Richard Klein balk, before getting the 'Frogs on the board and scoring on a Phillip Ervin single.
The Woodchucks would get the run back in their half of the fifth on a Dimitri De La Fuente solo-homer, but would allow two Bullfrogs runs to score in the sixth- as Mitch Haniger and Andy Hunter led off with a walk and a double, and scored on a later Matt Ozanne sacrifice fly and Duncan McAlpine single off reliever Nick Greene, making the score 8-3, Woodchucks.
Greene would surrender another run in the seventh - as Phillip Ervin walked, stole a bag, and scored on a Mitch Haniger single - but would strand two runners in scoring position to sustain an 8-4 lead.
Working against new Bullfrogs reliever Drew Bradshaw in the seventh, the 'Chucks would get back two unearned runs, as Kyle DeMerritt reached on a fielding error, Dimitri De La Fuente walked, Derek Peterson doubled, and Danny Susdorf hit a sacrifice fly to give the 'Chucks a 10-4 lead, with two innings to go.
The Bullfrogs continued to fight, however, as they came back with two quick runs to chase Nick Greene in the eighth inning, before Justin Burns would come and allow one more run, prior to dispatching the Bullfrogs, 10-7. In a game marred by five Green Bay fielding errors, the Woodchucks scored seven unearned runs - and three earned runs - off only six hits.
The 'Chucks committed three errors themselves, and allowed seven runs to score on eight Bullfrogs' hits.
The Woodchucks improved to 9-11, while the Bullfrogs moved to 11-10.
The series will relocate to Green Bay for games on Friday and Saturday, before the Woodchucks take their first off-day of the season on Sunday.
Jordan Luvisi is scheduled to take on Tim Giel in game two Friday night at Joannes Park.
