Madison Mallards News Release
MADISON, WI - June 23, 2011. The Madison Mallards knocked off the La Crosse Loggers in an error- ridden game 3-2 in front of 5,162 fans at the "Duck Pond" Thursday night.
The Mallards were able to get the lead early on a solo home run by Jordan Owen (Tennessee - Martin), his third of the season. The 1-0 lead would hold until the bottom of the fifth inning when Willie Argo (Illinois) drove in a run on a two-out single, his tenth RBI on the season.
"It's good to see a guy who works so hard seem so relaxed at the plate," said Mallards' field manager Greg Labbe, referring to Owen. "Jordan has worked at making adjustments, and seeing good things happen to him is rewarding."
La Crosse rallied for a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game. One run was driven in by Jake Stassi (Long Beach State), and the other scored on an error.
Luckily, Owen was able to score the decisive run on a wild pitch by Dan Child (Oregon State) in the bottom of the eighth to give the Mallards their third straight home win, and fifth in the last six games.
Zach White (Wake Forest) picked up the win for the Mallards in relief. White (1-0) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on no hits. He walked no batters and struck out five.
"As much as hitters slump, pitchers do too. White went through that recently, but he got his confidence back in our last road trip to Waterloo," Labbe said. "Tonight he had everything going for him, and the movement he put on his offspeed pitches was the best he's had all season."
Starter Ryan Bores (Cuyahoga Community College) was also impressive for the Ducks. He pitched only five innings, but did not surrender a run and only gave up one hit. Travis Parker (St. Louis) also pitched in relief, but was removed after being in a jam in the seventh inning.
La Crosse starting pitcher Erik Schoenrock (Memphis) looked good as well. Like Bores, Schoenrock went five innings, but he gave up two runs on six hits. He walked two and struck six batters out. Schoenrock did not factor Thursday's decision.
The loss was taken by Child (0-1), although the run he allowed was unearned. Two errors by the Loggers' defense in the eighth inning doomed the team for the remainder of the game.
Combined, the two teams had seven errors, three wild pitches, and four passed balls.
"When you play enough baseball, you're going to have games like this," said Labbe. "With the weather the way it has been, you can't expect a good clean game. I''ll take the win, although it certainly wasn't pretty."
The Mallards will now travel to La Crosse to take on the Loggers in game two of the three-game series Friday at 7:05 p.m. Both teams will return to Warner Park to round out the series on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
