Chris Byrne Joins Ottawa 67's Coaching Staff

June 1, 2006 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Ottawa 67's News Release

The Ottawa 67's are pleased to announce that Ottawa native Chris Byrne will join the hockey club as a full-time assistant coach. Byrne fills the position left vacant by Vince Malette, who resigned as assistant coach following the 2005-2006 season after nine years behind the 67's bench.

The 31-year-old Byrne joins the 67's from the Nepean Raiders (CJHL) where he served as Head Coach and General Manager and has enjoyed much success and accolades. Byrne guided the Raiders to consecutive championship seasons in 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 and was named CJHL 'Coach of the Year' and '1st All-Star Team Coach' both seasons.

Of the new challenges facing him with the Ottawa 67's, Byrne stated, "It has been my goal to work in the Ontario Hockey League since I started coaching. I am fortunate to be able to do so in Ottawa with the 67's. I look forward to working in the best organization in the OHL with Mr.Hunt, Mr. Kilrea and the 67's staff."

Recently, Byrne celebrated his 200th win with the Nepean Raiders, but not all of his success has been behind the bench. In 2003-2004, Byrne also received recognition by winning the Central Junior Hockey League's "Team Executive of the Year" award and was named "2nd All-Star Team General Manager."

Byrne will join Brian Kilrea's coaching staff alongside long time Assistant Coach Bert O'Brien and Goaltending Coach Tom Dempsey.

"We are extremely fortunate to have another successful Ottawa coach join our staff. Chris Byrne, like Vince Malette has had great success in the Central Junior league and we look forward to working with him" stated Brian Kilrea moments after announcing the addition to his staff.

The Ottawa 67's will enter their 40th year as a franchise and are looking forward to a promising season with Byrne's presence behind the bench.
