Inaugural GTHL/Majors Scholarship Award Winner Crowned

TORONTO, ON (June 1, 2006) - The Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) held its annual awards ceremony at the Hockey Hall of Fame last night. As a result, the Toronto St. Michael's Majors Scholarship award was handed out for the first time. The winner was Luke Reda, a member of the Minor Midget AAA Don Mills Flyers.

The award was established to recognize one of the GTHL's Minor Midget AAA players that achieves a high standard of excellence in hockey and school. It involves a one-time, post-secondary scholarship of $1,000, provided by the Majors.

Reda was a grade 10 student at St. Michael's College School this past year, where he achieved an average of 92%. The left winger also notched 36 points and 130 penalty minutes in 76 games with the Flyers. And, in terms of community endeavours, he spent five weeks volunteering with young children at the Muskoka Woods Sports Resort last summer, then participated in a tutoring program for underprivileged children this year.
