Chops season on the brink after 2-0 loss in San Antonio
April 4, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release
The Iowa Chops were shutout for the 7th time this season on Friday night in San Antonio by a 2-0 score. The loss dealt a major setback to the Iowa Chops playoff hopes. The Iowa Chops now are on the brink of elimination. In order to make the playoffs, the Iowa Chops need to win their remaining three games and hope that either Houston or Rockford lose each of their remaining four games in regulation. Any combination of a Chops regulation/OT/shootout loss in their last three games, or a point from Houston and Rockford in their remaining four games will eliminate the Chops from playoff contention.
The Chops came out in the first period ready to take down the Rampage, but the Rampage started out aggressively, shutting down the Chops' offense with help from goalie Josh Tordjman, while putting up 12 shots of their own. Joel Perrault found the back of the net late in the period, off of a crisp pass from linemate Dylan Reese to put the Rampage up by one.
The second period was slightly less eventful than the penalty-riddled first period, but it was Josh Tordjman and his solid play in net that muddled the Chops' offensive chances, stopping all 10 of their shots on net, including two power play chances. The power play strugged, going 0 for 6 on the night. Defenseman David Schlemko found the back of the net to put the Rampage up 2-0.
Neither team gave up any ground in the third period, as the power play units of both teams were stifled by choking defense and great goaltending. Neither team could capitalize on multiple opportunities, and it was the Rampage taking the tough shutout win.
The Chops square off against the Rampage again in San Antonio on Saturday, April 4th at 7:00pm. The game will be broadcast live on 98.3 WOW-FM in the Des Moines area. The game can also be heard live on the internet at www.983wowfm.com or at www.ahllive.com.
