Albany River Rats News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - Cohoes native Marc Cavosie struck back at his former team with a shorthanded goal and an assist as he led the Binghamton Senators to a 5-2 win over the Albany River Rats Saturday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

Both teams came out with a high rate of intensity in the first period, trading chances from on end of the ice to the other. Late in the period during a four-on-four situation Binghamton struck first as Greg Mauldin caused a turnover in the Albany zone, skated around the fallen Justin Peters and set up Mattias Karlsson for a rebound tip-in at 17:36. The crowd erupted in celebration of Mauldin's goal, but the River Rats silenced the fans 36 seconds later when Brandon Sutter made a long pass up the ice to send Jakub Petruzalek off on a breakaway. Petruzalek faked the puck to his backhand and then slid a shot between the pads of goalie Jeff Glass at 18:10 to tie the game 1-1, Petruzalek's 18th goal of the season.

Binghamton rookie Zack Smith took a roughing penalty after the final whistle of the first period, giving Albany its first power play of the game to begin the second period. It took the River Rats just 30 seconds to capitalize as Cory Quirk snapped home a shot from the low slot to give the visitors a 2-1 lead, assisted by Jamie McBain and Jerome Samson. Former River Rats center Marc Cavosie pulled the Senators back level with a shorthanded goal at 8:03, a fantastic individual effort to skate through two defenders for his 10th goal of the year. Binghamton retook the lead at 12:24 as Mauldin scored on a backhand shot into the top corner, beating Peters to the near post. Zack Smith would make up for his earlier penalty by scoring his 23rd goal of the season at 18:06, taking a great centering pass from Jim O'Brien in the slot and scorching a wrist shot into the top left corner of the net for a 4-2 Senators lead after forty minutes.

Albany rattled off five shots on goal in the first two minutes of the third period, but their momentum subsided as they had just three shots on target during final 18 minutes of the period. Binghamton did a good job of clogging up the ice and limiting scoring chances, although they also had few opportunities in the third. The Senators did add one goal to their total at 10:44 when Cavosie set up Mark Bomersback to cap off the scoring at 5-2.

Jeff Glass made 25 saves on 27 shots for his 16th win as Binghamton improved 40-28-5-4 on the season. Justin Peters stopped 35-of-40 shots faced as the River Rats fell to 31-38-3-4 on the year. The Senators out-shot Albany 40-27 in the game and went 0-for-2 on the power play; the River Rats were 1-for-2 with the man-advantage.

Albany will complete their weekend road trip with a 1:00 pm face off with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Sunday, April 5th at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The River Rats will return home on Wednesday, April 8th as they host the Philadelphia Phantoms at 7:00 pm at the Times Union Center.
