Houston Aeros News Release
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Houston Aeros dropped a 3-0 decision to the Lake Erie Monsters Saturday night keeping the team ranked fourth in the West Division. Lake Erie held a 1-0 lead entering the third period but netted two quick goals to keep the Aeros (37-30-1-9) at bay. Houston is on a three-game slide, tying their longest streak of the season, as they enter the final week of the season.
Anton Khudobin was between the pipes for the Aeros, fresh off his reassignment from the Minnesota Wild, stopping 16 of 19 shots faced. Opposite Khudobin was Lake Erie netminder Tyler Weiman who earned his league-leading eighth shutout of the season by knocking aside all 22 shots faced.
Lake Erie got on the board at 7:07 into the opening period when Philippe Dupuis centered the puck from behind the net to Matt Hendricks at the point who sent the puck top-shelf past Khudobin for the early lead. Shots were tied at eight apiece after the first 20 minutes of play as the teams took to the locker rooms for the intermission.
The second frame was held scoreless as Houston posted ten shots on net compared to the Monsters' two. The third period was once again in favor of Lake Erie when they took a 2-0 lead just 7:19 into the final period when Mike McLean intercepted a pass near center ice and raced off towards Khudobin uncontested. McLean made a move and potted the puck for his fourth goal of the season. Just 1:09 later Chris Durno added to Lake Erie's lead putting the team up 3-0 which would remain as the final.
Houston was only able to put three shots on net in the final frame after beginning the period down only 1-0. The Aeros were called for 27 penalty minutes in the final period but were able to kill off all 11 short handed situations in the game.
