Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, May 11, 2010) - Chivas USA forward Justin Braun was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 15 of the 2010 MLS season. Braun scored both goals in Chivas USA's 2-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday, July 10 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Braun scored the first of his goals in the 56th minute, picking up a loose ball after a defensive misplay and then firing a right-footed shot to the near post, beating Wizards goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen from 18 yards. His second strike came on a similar play in the 87th minute, when the forward intercepted a Jimmy Conrad pass, touched the ball around defender Shavar Thomas, and then curled a left-footed shot past Nielsen from 20 yards out.
The victory over the Kansas City Wizards snapped a seven-game winless streak in MLS play, though earlier in the week, Braun had also scored twice in a 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo in the U.S. Open Cup. Both wins came on the road, and made history; Chivas USA had previously never won in either Houston or Kansas City. The six goals that Braun has in MLS play leads the team and is tied for fifth in the league, and the forward has a total of eight goals in all competitions. This is Braun's first career Player of the Week award.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/ .
