Real Salt Lake News Release
SANDY, UTAH (Monday, July 12, 2010) - Real Salt Lake announced today that MF Nelson González will continue to wear Claret-and-Cobalt for the next 18 months, as the defending MLS Cup champions have extended the loan agreement currently in place with Quilmes Atlético Club of the Argentina Primera División (First Division) through the end of the 2011 MLS season. Per team policy, financial terms of the deal will not be disclosed. González was acquired on loan from the then-Argentine Second Division side last August and will continue to occupy an International Player spot on Real Salt Lake's roster through the remainder of the loan spell.
"We are happy to have Nelson signed up to stay with us for at least this season and next," said RSL General Manager Garth Lagerwey. "He is a talented young player who works hard, and we feel that a further investment on our part will lead to continued progress by Nelson, giving him an opportunity to become an even bigger part of our team."
Although the 21-year-old Argentine did not appear in any regular season games after coming to Real Salt Lake last year, he contributed immediately this season, starting in one of his six appearances and totaling 142 minutes of play before suffering a hamstring injury in early May. In that time, González contributed his first point in MLS action, his corner kick assist on FW Ãlvaro SaborÃo's game-tying goal late in Real Salt Lake's home opener versus Seattle Sounders FC on April 10. González also registered 61 minutes in RSL's 3-3 draw - and eventual advancement in penalty kicks - in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup action at the San Jose Earthquakes on April 14 and also played the full 90 minutes in the RSL Reserves' exhibition match against the Mexican Under-21 National Team on May 15.
Gonzalez spent his first two professional seasons with Quilmes in Argentina's Second Division (Primera Nacional B), making his debut on May 3, 2008, with his lone appearance of the team's 2007/08 season before playing in nine contests (one start) for El Cervecero in their 2008/09 campaign.
