Chihuahuas Overpower I-Cubs

June 4, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (34-25) were defeated 6-3 by the El Paso Chihuahuas (37-21) in a battle of division leaders on Tuesday night at Principal Park. The I-Cubs blasted three home runs in the loss.

I-Cubs starter Matt Swarmer (L, 4-6) labored through 5.0 innings by surrendering six runs in his first four innings before spinning a scoreless fifth.

The I-Cubs responded to the early El Paso onslaught with a solo blast from Phillip Evans in the second inning, while Donnie Dewees and Ian Happ went deep in the fourth. The effort fell short as the damage was already done.

Major League rehabber Franchy Cordero brought in a pair of runs, including an RBI double in the second and a solo shot in the fourth. The home run would cap the scoring as both bullpens were lights out.

Tony Barnette, Duane Underwood Jr. and James Norwood each spun scoreless outings to hold the deficit at three, but the I-Cubs had just one baserunner after the fourth inning, ending the game at 6-3.

POSTGAME NOTES:

- Phillip Evans has three home runs in his last two games.

- Matt Swarmer gave up a pair of homers and has allowed 13th on the season.

- Evans and Ian Happ both hit their ninth home runs of the season to tie Trent Giambrone atop the I-Cubs leaderboard.

The I-Cubs are back in action tomorrow with a 12:08 p.m. first pitch. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
