Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs survived a 13-inning marathon against the Pawtucket Red Sox, 11-10, in four hours and 47 minutes Monday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Down 7-0 after three innings, Syracuse scored seven unanswered runs, eventually tying the game in the eighth inning, and then answered a PawSox run in the tenth, two in the 12th, and finally won the game in the 13th inning.
Syracuse (44-63) trailed, 7-4, entering the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs, Andrew Stevenson singled. Victor Robles then worked a walk, and on the play, ball four was a wild pitch that allowed Stevenson to move all the way to third base. Jacob Wilson followed with a double that advanced Robles to third and scored Stevenson to cut the Pawtucket lead to two, 7-5. Yadiel Hernandez then singled, scoring both Robles and Wilson, tying the game, 7-7, and eventually sending the game to extra innings.
Pawtucket (48-57) scored in the top of the tenth against Syracuse reliever Jimmy Cordero. Tony Renda began the inning at second base, per the extra innings rule implanted this year. Cole Sturgeon pushed Renda over to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Renda then scored on a slow roller hit by î"scar Hernández where the flip home was late as the Red Sox took an 8-7 lead.
The Chiefs retied the game in the bottom of the tenth off Red Sox reliever Fernando Rodriguez. Robles began the frame at second. Wilson grounded out to third, but Robles moved to third base on the play. Hernandez then walked, putting runners at first and third. Two batters later, Robles scored when a ball bounced in the dirt and then up inside the chest protector of Pawtucket catcher î"scar Hernández for a dead ball that allowed Robles to score, knotting the game, 8-8.
After neither team scored in the 11th inning, the Red Sox scored twice in the 12th. Sturgeon started at second base and moved to third on a Hernández sacrifice bunt. Aneury Tavarez and Brandon Phillips both walked to load the bases. Rusney Castillo followed with a single to center field, scoring Sturgeon to give Pawtucket a 9-8 edge. Adam Lind then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing home Tavarez from third to push the Red Sox lead to two, 10-8.
But the Chiefs answered again in the bottom of the 12th inning. With Stevenson on second, Robles singled, and Wilson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Stevenson to cut the score to 10-9. After Hernandez singled, José Marmolejos doubled to the fence in center, and Robles beat the throw to the plate to again tie the game at ten.
Bengie Gonzalez held the PawSox off the board in the 13th on the mound, and in the bottom of the 13th, Irving Falu started on second. Gonzalez hit a ground ball to short. Iván De Jesî=BAs fielded and threw to third, but the throw got away, allowing Falu to score on the fielder's choice and throwing error to win the game for the Chiefs, 11-10.
Pawtucket leaped to an early lead with six runs in the top of the second inning off Syracuse starting pitcher Austin Voth. Sam Travis led off with a double. De Jesus Jr. followed with a single that put runners on first and third base. Voth then struck out Mike Miller for the first out of the inning, but Sturgeon singled, scoring Travis for a 1-0 Red Sox lead. Voth came back with a strikeout of Hernández for the second out of the inning. Tavarez singled home De Jesî=BAs Jr. from second for a 2-0 advantage. Brandon Phillips followed with a double to left field that scored Sturgeon from third and Tavarez from first to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Rusney Castillo capped off the inning with a two-run home run over the right-field wall that extended the Pawtucket lead to 6-0.
The Red Sox scored again in the third. Travis began the inning with a single. With De Jesî=BAs Jr. batting, Travis moved to third on a passed ball. Voth struck out both De Jesus Jr. and Miller to put two outs on the board. With Sturgeon batting, Travis stole third. Sturgeon then singled off of Voth's foot, scoring Travis to push Pawtucket's edge to 7-0.
The Chiefs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Pedro Severino crushed a pitch over the left-field fence for his fourth home run in 13 games played with the Chiefs this season as Syracuse trimmed the deficit to six, 7-1.
Syracuse pushed another run across in the fifth. Bengie Gonzlaez led off the frame with a walk. Chris Dominguez followed with a doubled to the right-center-field wall, scoring Gonzalez from first to make the score 7-2.
The Chiefs scored a run for the third straight inning with a tally in the sixth. With two outs, Gonzalez doubled to the right-field corner. After Dominguez walked, placing runners at first and second, Stevenson chopped a ball up the middle to center field, scoring Gonzalez to cut the Pawtucket lead to four, 7-3.
Syracuse used one swing of the bat to score again. With one out, Hernandez drilled his team-leading ninth home run of the season over the right-field wall to bring the Chiefs within three runs, 7-4.
The Chiefs and the Red Sox continue their four-game series with the second game on Tuesday night. RHP Jefry Rodriguez will pitch for Syracuse while RHP Josh A. Smith will be on the mound for Pawtucket. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
