Chiefs take series finale, 5-1
September 1, 2009 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Peoria Chiefs took the final game of a four game series from the Kernels by the score of 5-1 on Monday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kernels starter Manaurys Correa (7-10) slowed down the Chiefs, allowing three runs on nine hits over 6.1 innings, but didn't receive much offensive support as the Kernels were 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.
The Kernels scored in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Gabe Jacobo to score Alexi Amarista. Amarista finished the game 2-4 with two doubles and a stolen bases as Peoria starter Chris Archer (6-4) held the Kernels to a run on four hits and struck out four over five innings for the win. Kyler Burke went 2-3 with a double and RBI.
It was a tough month of August for the Kernels as they finished 13-16. Offensively, Darwin Perez hit .389 with 16 RBI and Roberto Lopez drove in 19 runs, but the pitching struggled with a 5.64 ERA as Tyler Chatwood went 4-1 with a 3.62 ERA in six August starts to lead the Kernel starter.
The playoff bound Kernels will enjoy a well-deserved day off on Tuesday before embarking on their final road trip of the 2009 MWL regular season - a three game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers with the first game set for Wednesday at 6:35 pm. John Rodgers brings you the action on the radio home of Kernels baseball, 1450 KMRY AM. Fans may listen on-line at www.kmryradio.com
The Kernels wrap up the 2009 MWL regular season with a three game series with the Burlington Bees starting Saturday, September 5th. Fireworks follow the games on Saturday and Sunday and the regular season ends with a 2:05 pm game on Labor Day, Monday, September 7th. Tickets may be ordered on-line at www.kernels.com
