
Angels bolster Kernels roster for stretch run and playoffs

The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce several roster moves: OF Michael Trout, INF Jean Almanzar, INF Rolando Gomez, and RHP Michael Rocco will join the Kernels from Tempe; and RHP Garrett Richards will join from Orem. Abe Flores, Director of Player Development for the LA Angels, announced the moves on Tuesday.
Trout is the Angels first round (25th overall) pick out of Millville Senior HS in Millville, NJ and in 39 games for the AZL Angels, he batted .360 with a HR, 25 RBI, and 13 stolen bases with a .418 on-base percentage and .506 slugging percentage.
Richards is a supplemental first round pick (42nd overall - for Francisco Rodriguez) out of the University of Oklahoma. In eight starts at Orem, he posted a 3-1 record and 1.53 ERA, allowing six runs and 37 hits in 35.1 IP with just four walks and 30 strikeouts.
Gomez, 20, was selected by the Angels in the 11th round of the 2008 draft out of Flanagan HS in Pembroke Pines, FL. He batted .304 (55-181) with 2 HR and 19 RBI in 45 games at Tempe with 12 stolen bases and 32 walks.
The Angels signed Almanzar, 20, as a non-drafted free agent in March of 2006. The native of Salcedo, DR batted .310 (36-116) in 29 games at Tempe with six doubles and 18 RBI.
Rocco, 24, was acquired by the Angels from Chillicothe in the Frontier League (IND) and was originally drafted by the White Sox in the 24th round of the 2006 Free Agent Draft out of Cal State San Bernardino. He was 2-2 with a 2.43 ERA and five saves in 22 relief appearances at Tempe and struck out 36 with just five walks in 29.2 IP.
To make room on the Kernels active roster, RHP Francis Cabrera was promoted to Arkansas; OF Jeff Jones was assigned to Tempe; and RHP Kyle Hurst (right elbow irritation), INF Jon Townsend (right hamstring strain) and INF Adam Younger (left elbow irritation) were all placed on the 7-day disabled list. With today's transactions, the Kernels roster is at the MWL maximum of 25 active players with eight on the disabled list.
The playoff-bound Kernels begin a three game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Wednesday at 6:35 pm from Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, WI.
