South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - With a 6-3 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts on Tuesday night at Coveleski Stadium, the South Bend Silver Hawks have extended their lead on the idle Dayton Dragons to 1.5 games with five remaining in the regular season for South Bend (Dayton still has six to play).
The loss by Lansing also crippled their playoff chances, as they have fallen four games back of South Bend with only five remaining on the Lugnuts schedule.
Trailing 2-0, South Bend broke through for three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh. With one out, Alfredo Marte singled off of Lansing starter Ryan Shopshire (ND) to start the rally. Ryan Wheeler tripled to center field, picking up his first South Bend RBI as Marte scored to make it 2-1. After Dustin Antolin (LP, 1-5) replaced Shopshire, Rossmel Perez had a RBI single and Clayton Conner's fielder's choice scored another run, giving South Bend a 3-2 lead.
The Hawks extended the lead in the seventh against Antolin and Yorman Mayora (ND), with Reynaldo Navarro driving home Jake Elmore for the 4-2 lead with a double to right. Marte's RBI single made it 5-2 and gave him his team leading 66th RBI of the season. Justin Parker rounded out the scoring with a RBI single, snapping a 0-for-20 skid in the process.
Keny Sosa (WP, 2-3) continued to show his good stuff on the mound, allowing just two runs (one earned) over 6.0 innings. Sosa has lowered his ERA to 2.19 in seven starts this season for South Bend.
Victor Capellan (ND) allowed a solo home run to Johermyn Chavez in the eighth, but that was his only dent against his line in 2.0 innings of relief. Justin Mace (SV, 11) allowed a two out single in the ninth, but recorded the save.
The Silver Hawks are back on the road tomorrow for a very important three game series against the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field. First pitch is at 7:00 PM Eastern Time with RHP Brett Moorhouse (5-13, 4.41 ERA) of South Bend going against Dayton's RHP Mark Serrano (2-1, 2.28 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
