Chiefs Score Six Unanswered Runs to Rally Past Cubs, 7-4

South Bend, IN - The Chiefs kicked off their 12-game, 13-day road trip in grand fashion Tuesday. Trailing three runs entering the eighth, the Chiefs scored the final six runs of the contest to rally past the South Bend Cubs, 7-4.

After Peoria starter Austin Love mowed through South Bend in the first, the Cubs plated a run in the second. With a runner on first, Jonathan Sierra scored Pablo Aliendo on a double to make it 1-0 South Bend. From there, Love then retired eight of the next nine batters he faced to venture through the fourth.

In the fifth, Ramon Mendoza got the Chiefs on the board. On an 0-2 pitch, Mendoza cleared the wall in left center to tie the game at one. For Mendoza, it was his first home run in a Chiefs uniform and his second of 2022.

South Bend wasted no time as they regained the lead in the fifth. The Cubs sent eight men to the plate as they scored three times in the inning to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Yeison Santana's two-run triple served as the big blow in the frame.

In the bottom of the seventh, South Bend appeared poised to put the game away. With runners on the corners and one out, Enmanuel Solano dialed up a clutch double play to end the inning.

Solano's heroics helped set the stage for a three-run eighth inning to tie the contest. After Mike Antico and Tyler Reichenborn drew consecutive walks, Osvaldo Tovalin doubled off the right field wall to allow Antico to scamper home and cut the deficit to 4-2. The next batter, Todd Lott, brought Reichenborn in with a sac fly to left. With the score, at 4-3, LJ Jones completed the rally. On the eighth pitch of the at-bat, Jones doubled off the left field wall to bring home Tovalin and knot the score.

In the bottom of the eighth, Solano worked around a lead-off walk on the strength of a second double play to twirl a scoreless frame. All told, the right-hander worked two scoreless innings to earn his first win of the year.

In the ninth, the Chiefs offense scored three more times to secure the win for Solano. After the first three batters reached via a walk, a hit by pitch and a sac bunt, the bases were loaded for Antico. With his 12-game hit streak on the line, Antico collected his only hit of the night, a two-run, go-ahead single to make it 6-4 Peoria. An RBI fielder's choice from Tovalin, his eighth RBI in three starts, pushed the lead to 7-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, Gianluca Dalatri locked down his third save in a Chiefs uniform after working around a lead-off double. On the year, the Chiefs collected their 13th come-from-behind win this season.

Game two of the series continues Wednesday at 7:05/6:05 CST. Right-hander Zane Mills will start for Peoria.
