West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The West Michigan Whitecaps struggled in key situations with runners on base as part of a 4-2 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels Wednesday afternoon in front of 3,049 fans at Perfect Game Field.
The 'Caps went 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 12 runners on base in the defeat. On three occasions, the 'Caps stranded the bases loaded, including going scoreless despite putting the first three hitters on base to start the seventh.
A Kennie Taylor RBI-single in the second inning opened the scoring before Ulrich Bojarski knotted the game with a run-scoring double. In the third, Alex Gray's two-run homer gave Cedar Rapids a 3-1 lead before an RBI-double by Alerick Soularie extended the lead to 4-1. Meanwhile, the 'Caps loaded the bases in the third, sixth, and seventh innings. In the seventh, the 'Caps loaded the bags with none out, but Eliezer Alfonzo, Jake Holton, and Trei Cruz each struck out to end the threat. In the eighth, an infield single by Jose King plated a run, and a Daniel Cabrera double placed the potential winning run in scoring position before Ben Malgeri grounded out to end the threat.
Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Brent Headrick (7-2) threw all but 18 of his 75 pitches for strikes, lasting five innings while allowing just one run to earn his seventh win of the 2022 season, while Montero (3-3) suffered his third loss. The Whitecaps record falls to 30-35 as Cedar Rapids improves to 43-22. Infielder Carlos Mendoza enjoyed his first three-hit performance in the Midwest League with a double and a run scored in a losing cause.
