Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) host the Lake County Captains (affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians) in a doubleheader at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District. These are the second and third games of a seven-game series.

Season Series vs. Lake County: Dayton 7, Lake County 5. Current Series: Lake County 1, Dayton 0.

Dragons in the Standings: Dayton is in second place in the MWL East Division, one-half game behind Great Lakes with three games to play in the first half season. The final day of the first half is Thursday, June 23. Great Lakes' magic number to eliminate the Dragons is two. The Dragons magic number to eliminate Great Lakes is four.

Historical Perspective: The Dragons have earned two first half division titles in their 21 seasons, winning the first half East Division title in 2001 and again in 2007. Their last second half division title came in 2011.

Last Game: Tuesday: Lake County 11, Dragons 2. The Captains broke open a close game with six runs in the sixth inning. Austin Hendrick led the Dragons with a home run and double as part of a five-hit attack. The Captains produced 15 hits, matching the 2022 season high for a Dragons opponent. Mike Amditis went 4 for 4 and Johnathan Rodriguez hit two home runs for Lake County.

Team Notes

Last night's loss dropped the Dragons out of first place for the first time since April 15.

Dayton is tied for first in the MWL in home runs with 75 (with Cedar Rapids). The Dragons lead the league in slugging percentage at .420. However, the Dragons lead the league in strikeouts (their total of 740 is third most in Minor League Baseball).

The Dragons have played 11 series, winning eight, splitting one, and losing two.

Player Notes

Elly De La Cruz (seventh youngest position player in the league with at least 100 AB) over his last 23 games is batting .344 with seven home runs and 20 RBI. De La Cruz is first in the MWL slugging percentage (.584), second in extra base hits (31), fifth in batting average (.299), tied for second in RBI (43), fourth in home runs (13).

Justice Thompson over his last 25 games is batting .292 with three home runs and 15 RBI.

Joe Boyle has an earned run average of 0.78 and opponent's batting average of .089 on the year, but he is four innings short of having the minimum number of innings to qualify for the league lead.

Connor Phillips is tied for first in the MWL in strikeouts with 84 and first in opponent batting average (.171). Since April 28, Phillips has made eight starts, posting a 2.35 ERA (46 IP, 26 H, 14 R, 12 ER, 17 BB, 63 SO).
