CHIEFS' OFFENSE SHINES IN 7-3 WIN OVER PATS

SMITH AND WOODS LEAD THE WAY ON SATURDAY NIGHT

Spokane, Wash. -- The Spokane Chiefs jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on for a 7-3 win over the Memorial Cup host Regina Pats at Spokane Arena on Saturday night. Ty Smith led the Chiefs with three points while former Pat Riley Woods scored the game-winner.

Spokane tilted the ice early, scoring two goals in the first five minutes of regulation to take a 2-0 lead. The first was a point shot from Smith that found the top-right corner through a screen. The second was a shorthanded breakaway converted by Los Angeles Kings prospect Jaret Anderson-Dolan off a springing assist by Woods, who was acquired by the Chiefs from Regina last season.

The Chiefs continued to extend their lead in the second as Eli Zummack punched in a rebound for his sixth of the season at the 4:25 mark. Woods found open space in the high slot and deflected a shot from the left wing to earn his 10th of the year with 13:57 left in the middle frame.

Hudson Elynuik made it 2-0 at the 13:38 mark of the second as Riley McKay found him on a rebound scrum for an easy tap in.

Regina made it interesting, scoring three-straight goals beginning with Nick Henry's second of the year with 4:25 left in the second to make it 5-1. Anaheim Ducks prospect Sam Steel finished a beautiful three-touch play down the left wing to make it 5-2 and Matt Bradley fired a slapshot through traffic for his 17th goal at 6:41 of the third to make it a two-goal game.

Spokane buckled down defensively before responding with two more goals of their own to seal the game late. Forward Zach Fischer chipped in his ninth of the season after an impact effort play by Elynuik to keep the puck in the left corner before finding Fischer open in front.

Rookie winger Carter Chorney capped the high-scoring affair with his first career Western Hockey League goal, blocking a shot and going the other way for a breakaway to score unassisted.

Spokane dominated with the man advantage, finishing 4-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill along with Anderson-Dolan's shorthanded goal. The Chiefs outshot the Pats 32-23.

Donovan Buskey started in net for the Chiefs and earned his third WHL win. Tyler Brown started for the Pats and made 16 saves on 21 shots faced in 40 minutes, while Max Paddock came on in relief in the third and made nine saves on 11 chances.
