COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Peoria Chiefs led all game long, right up until the end of the eighth inning when the West Michigan Whitecaps scored two runs for a 3-2 win on Friday night. The loss, their third in a row, drops the Chiefs to 16-11 in the second half and 53-43 overall heading to South Bend .

Vaughn Bryan led off the game with a triple to right-center, his eighth of the season. With one down, Justin Ringo singled to center to put the Chiefs on top of Buck Farmer and the Whitecaps 1-0.

Farmer, the Midwest League leader in wins with nine, put up four zeroes after the first inning but the Chiefs Blake McKnight matched him. Peoria grabbed an unearned run in the sixth against Montreal Robertson. Steve Bean doubled with one out and moved to third on a grounder, however Dominic Ficocello forgot there was a runner on and threw the ball around the infield. The shortstop, not expecting a throw, didn't make the catch and the ball sailed into the outfield allowing Bean to score.

West Michigan finally got a rally going in the sixth as Austin Schotts singled with one out and Wynton Bernard walked. Javier Betancourt singled and Steve Sabatino came in for McKnight. Sabatino stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Chiefs on top 2-0.

The Whitecaps got on the board in the seventh with a two-out rally against Sabatino. Willy Adames singled and scored without a throw as Bennett Pickar doubled to the wall in left-center. The run was the first earned run against Sabatino in 35 innings dating back to last season.

West Michigan rallied again in the eighth against Josh Lucas as Bernard and Betancourt singled to start the inning. With runners on the corners, Lucas struck out Rhymes and Ficocello as Betancourt stole second. The runner taking second proved crucial as Jeff Holm lined a single into right scoring both runners for a 3-2 Whitecaps lead. Holm went to third on an error in right by Castillo but was left on base as Francisco Contreras popped out.

The Chiefs got a leadoff walk from Richy Pedroza in the ninth and Rafael Medina singled against Zac Reininger. After a strikeout, Bryan singled to left and Pedroza was held at third. Juan Herrera ran for Rafael Medina at second before CJ McElroy popped out to shortstop. Ringo grounded to shortstop to end the game with the Chiefs getting swept by the Whitecaps

McKnight allowed three hits and a walk over 5 1/3 shutout innings while striking out five. Sabatino allowed one run on two hits over 1 2/3 innings while striking out two. Lucas (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits while taking the loss with two strikeouts in one inning of work.
