July 18, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Appleton, Wisc. - Four runs came across for the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) in the third inning to give German Marquez an early lead. He struck out nine Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Milwaukee Brewers) batters to keep his end of the bargain in a 6-2 victory. The triumph sealed the series victory for the Hot Rods who are in the thick of the Midwest League's Eastern Division playoff race.

The game was scoreless until the Hot Rods broke through in the third. Spencer Edwards led off with a single, and proceeded to steal second base. Alexander Simon followed with a walk, and Elias Torres came up trying to bunt both runners over. Instead of an out, he was struck by a pitch to load the bases. Julian Ridings came through with a double to left-center field to plate both Edwards and Simon. With Torres at third, Kean Wong hit a sacrifice fly to drive him home, and Ty Young capped the inning with a base hit that scored Ridings from second base. The Hot Rods led 4-0.

Darryl George kept the offensive outburst going as he led off the fifth inning with a home run to left-center field. It was George's fourth of the season, after he didn't homer with short-season Hudson Valley all of last season.

Wisconsin would make the game interesting with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Clint Coulter started the rally with a single, and David Denson moved him to second base with a hit of his own. The bases were loaded with a walk to Taylor Brennan, and Dustin DeMuth then walked to force home Coulter. Jose Pena grounded into a double play, while it scored Denson, the play stunted the rally and the Hot Rods escaped the inning still leading, 5-2.

The Hot Rods cemented their lead in the sixth when George scored on an error, giving the game its final score.

Cheers erupted from the first-base seats when Appleton, Wisc., native Brad Schreiber entered the ballgame in the sixth for Bowling Green. Schreiber tossed three scoreless innings and struck out five batters on the field he played on in high school during the Wisconsin state tournament.

German Marquez (3-5) was superb as Bowling Green's starter as he struck out a career-high nine batters, and at one point, seven in a row. He was replaced by Schreiber after five innings, and registered his fifth victory. Victor Diaz (3-4) started for Wisconsin and took the loss. He was chased in the fifth after allowing five runs.

The second-leg of the Hot Rods' six-game road trip gets underway Saturday night in Beloit, Wisconsin. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. CT, and the Pepsi Pre-Game Show begins at 6:45 p.m. CT on the radio home of the Hot Rods, 1340 WBGN - The Ticket. The Hot Rods return to town on Wednesday, July 23.
