
Kernels Score in the 11th and Walk Off Winners

Lake County Captains News Release
(Cedar Rapids, IA)- Cedar Rapids gets the benefit of a late inning call and defeated the Captains 6-5 in 11 innings. With runners at the corners, a sharp groundball was hit to third base and Grant Fink threw home. Richard Stock tagged the runner before he touched the plate, but the runner was ruled safe and the Captains fell 6-5. The Kernels swept the Captains with the win and Lake County has lost three straight games on the heels of their six game winning-streak.
Lake County opened the scoring in the top of the opening frame. Claudio Bautista led off the ballgame with a double to left field. With two outs, Nellie Rodriguez singled home Bautista and it was 1-0 Captains.
Cedar Rapids tied the ballgame in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Swim reached on a three base error with one out. Swim scored on an infield single from Jason Kanzler and the game was tied at 1-1.
Michael Quesada blasted his third home run of the season over the left field wall and the Kernels took the 4-1 lead. The homer was the third straight hit of the bottom of the fourth inning and the third of the season for Quesada.
Cedar Rapids scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brian Haar doubled to left field to lead off. Haar advanced to third on a balk and scored on a passed ball. The score after six innings was 5-1 Kernels.
Lake County scored four of runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game. Jorge Martinez reached on an error to begin the frame. Martinez was at third base with two outs and was doubled home by Claudio Bautista. The score was 5-2. Bautista scored on a single from Clint Frazier and the score was 5-3. Mike Papi then smacked his first pro homer over the right field fence and the score was tied at 5-5.
LHP Luis Lugo (5-7) started the game for the Captains and did not get a decision. Lugo pitched five innings and allowed four runs, three earned runs on seven hits. Lugo struck out six and allowed his 12th homer of the season to Quesada. Anderson Polanco entered in relief in the sixth inning and pitched three innings and allowed one earned run. Polanco allowed three hits and struck out three. Jimmy Stokes entered in the ninth for the Captains. Stokes pitched two innings and did not allow a run. Carlos Melo (0-1) took the loss after the winning run scored in the 11th inning.
RHP Aaron Slegers (6-6) started for Cedar Rapids and did not get a decision. Slegers pitched six and two thirds innings and allowed six hits, four runs, three earned runs, two walks and he fanned five. Brandon Bixler pitched one and one third innings and allowed one earned run while striking out a pair. The win went to Jake Reed (2-0) after a scoreless inning of relief.
The Captains will remain on the road to continue a six-game road trip to the state of Iowa. On Saturday, Lake County will take on the Quad Cities River Bandits. The Captains will send RHP Mitch Brown (2-7, 4.45) to the mound and the River Bandits will counter with RHP Michael Feliz (5-2, 3.12). First Pitch is at 7:00 PM from Modern Woodman Park in Davenport, IA.
