Peoria Chiefs News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA- The Peoria Chiefs rallied late to tie the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday night but eventually lost 2-1 on a walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th. The loss ends the Chiefs three-game win streak and drops Peoria to 4-5 in the second half and 42-34 overall.

Neither offense got going through the first three innings as Peoria's Hector Hernandez and Cedar Rapids' Brett Lee matched zeroes. Cedar Rapids broke through in the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Adam Brett Walker drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Max Kepler doubled down the right-field line for a 1-0 Kernels lead.

Heading into the eighth inning, the Chiefs had just two Patrick Wisdom singles against Lee. With one out in the eighth, Nick Martini singled to right and Gerwuins Velazco singled to left to mark just the second time all night the Chiefs had a runner past first base. Breyvic Valera's grounder went through the legs of shortstop Jorge Polanco allowing Martini to score the tying run. With runners on the corners, Ildemaro Vargas bunted into a fielders' choice with Valera out at second and Velazco stuck at third. Lee struck out Jacob Wilson to keep the game tied 1-1.

Hernandez got into trouble in the bottom of the eight as two walks, and an error loaded the bases with two outs. However he got a groundout to shortstop to end the threat. Both teams put two runners on base in the ninth but neither team could get the go-ahead hit with two outs.

With Thomas Lee on the mound in the 10th inning, Walker led off with a single to left and stole second base. Kepler walked on a full count pitch and Tyler Grimes bunted just out of the reach of Wisdom who was charging from third. Lee threw to first in time to retire Grimes but Walker moved to third with Kepler taking second. Zach Russell entered the game and with Michael Quesada batting, a wild pitch allowed Walker to score the winning run.

Hernandez allowed one run on five hits over eight innings while walking three and striking out six. Lee (2-1) allowed one run on three hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings while suffering the loss. Russell threw a wild pitch to the only batter he faced.
