Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, Ind.-The South Bend Silver Hawks produced a pair of three-run innings to come from behind in both games of a doubleheader and sweep the Dayton Dragons on Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 4-1 and taking the nightcap 4-2. The losses dropped the Dragons to 5-6 in the second half while South Bend improved to 6-5.
The Dragons led 1-0 when South Bend scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning of game one, taking advantage of a two-out error to go on to the win. In game two, the Dragons scored two runs in the top of the first inning on run-scoring singles by Jesse Winker and Seth Mejias-Brean, but South Bend scored three times in the fifth to jump ahead 4-2 and close out the scoring.
Dragons first game starting pitcher Drew Cisco (3-5) pitched well but was charged with the loss. He tossed five and two-thirds innings and allowed four runs, but only one was earned. He gave up seven hits and one walk while striking out seven.
Mike Saunders, the Dragons spot starter in game two, also pitched well. He worked four innings, allowing just one hit and one unearned run with two walks and no strikeouts, leaving the game with a 2-1 lead. The loss was pinned on reliever Tony Amezcua (2-1), who allowed three runs (two earned) in two-thirds of an inning. He allowed one hit and one walk in the fifth inning, a frame that also included three passed balls and a wild pitch as South Bend took the lead.
The Dragons, who were hitting .300 in the second half entering the game (through nine games), saw their bats quieted. They collected just 10 hits in the doubleheader after picking up at least 10 hits in seven of their previous eight games. Winker had the best day among Dragons hitters, going 3 for 5 with two doubles, a run scored, and two runs batted in. Mejias-Brean was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Junior Arias was 2 for 7 in the twinbill with a stolen base and a run scored.
The Dragons (5-6) battle the Silver Hawks (6-5) in the last game of the three-game series on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Nick Travieso (2-2, 5.57) will start for the Dragons against South Bend's Brad Allen (2-4, 6.79).
