Peoria Chiefs News Release

Beloit, WI - The Peoria Chiefs saw a three-run lead slip away but they rallied for a 4-3 win as they held off the Beloit Snappers in the seventh and ninth innings. The win moves the Chiefs to 1- 1 on the half and 39-30 overall.

The Chiefs grabbed the lead in the second inning against Vincent Voiro. Jordan Walton doubled to right field to start the inning and he moved to third on a flyout. A wild pitch brought home Walton for a 1-0 Chiefs lead.

Peoria extended the lead in the third inning. Breyvic Valera beat out an infield single with one out and Jacob Wilson hit a line drive two-run homer just inside the left-field foul pole. The homer, his 10th of the season, came in Wilson's second at-bat since being hit in the head and placed on the disabled list last Thursday at Clinton.

Chiefs starter Kyle Helisek retired the first nine Snappers he faced before walking the first two batters in the fourth inning. With one out, Renato Nunez doubled to left for the first Beloit hit of the game as both runners scored. Helisek escaped the inning with a 3-2 lead and kept the Snappers off the board in the fifth inning as well.

Beloit tied the game in the sixth against Thomas Lee. Chris Bostick singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. A single by Daniel Robertson tied the game 3-3 as Bostick kicked the ball out of Gerwuins Velazco's mitt on a play at the plate.

The Chiefs grabbed the lead without a hit in the seventh. Derek DeYoung walked Michael Swinson to start the inning and a Velazco sacrifice put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Valera drew a walk and DeYoung threw wildly to first on a sac bunt by Ildemaro Vargas allowing Swinson to score. With the Chiefs up 4-3, Walton drew a walk to load the bases with two outs but DeYoung got out of the inning.

The first two Snappers singled against Lee in the bottom of the seventh and the Chiefs got an out at third on a sacrifice attempt. Dixon Llorens replaced Lee and an infield single by Brett Vertigan loaded the bases. Llorens struck out Bostick and Robertson grounded out to first to end the inning.

Beloit threatened again in the ninth against Robert Stock. Ryan Mathews walked to start the inning and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw by Stock. Nick Rickles flew out to right moving the tying run to third with one out. Stock struck out pinch-hitter Bruce Maxwell III and got Vertigan on a soft liner to first base to end the game.

Helisek allowed two runs on two hits over five innings in a no-decision. He struck out two and walked two in the no-decision. Lee (2-0) allowed one run on four hits over 1 1/3 innings with a wild pitch. Llorens picked up his first hold with one hit allowed over 1 2/3 shutout innings and three strikeouts. Stock allowed one hit over a shutout inning with a strikeout in his second save of the season.
