Kane County Cougars News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - After falling behind early, the Kane County Cougars fought back to tie the game but couldn't keep it even as the Quad Cities River Bandits strung together 15 hits in a 4-2 win on Friday night at Modern Woodmen Park.
Tayler Scott surrendered 11 hits in just five innings but was able to limit the River Bandits (40-31, 2-0) to just two runs. Teoscar Hernandez singled to start the bottom of the first and advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a Carlos Correa base hit.
Jesse Wierzbicki followed with a single of his own to right field, but Correa was cut down trying to advance to third, thwarting the threat for Quad Cities. In the bottom of the second, the River Bandits did add to the advantage as Austin Elkins blasted a long home run to right, putting Quad Cities on top by two.
Mike Hauschild kept the lead intact until the top of the fifth when he walked Marco Hernandez with one out. Hernandez scored when Carlos Escobar knocked him in with a single. Reggie Golden came home on a Gioskar Amaya two-bagger to even the score at 2-2.
Jordan Jankowski (3-0) kept the Cougars (30-38, 0-2) through the next three frames while fanning six. Lendy Castillo (0-5) couldn't do the same though as the River Bandits grabbed the lead in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Elkins hit a bouncer to Amaya at second which could have been a double play ball, but Hernandez dropped the flip from Amaya, allowing Roberto Pena to score the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the eighth, Wierzbicki singled home another run to give the River Bandits a 4-2 cushion. John Neely (S, 12) worked a perfect top of the ninth to close out Quad Cities's second consecutive victory to begin the second half.
The Cougars and River Bandits play in game three of their four-game set on Saturday night with a 7:00 start. Left-hander Michael Heesch (3-5) starts for the Cougars against fellow southpaw Colton Cain (3-5). The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Tuesday, June 25, to take on the Beloit Snappers at 6:30 p.m. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
