Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Johnstown, PA - The Chiefs would score early and often in the first period to bury the Wheeling Nailers 7-1 at the War Memorial Friday night.
Johnstown would barrage the Wheeling net in the first period, finding the score sheet four times. Nathan Saunders would score his first of the season, opening the scoring on the first shot of the game as he fired a screamer past Wheeling goaltender Curtis Darling at 1:02. Joey Olson and Ryan Garlock added the helpers. Jean Desrochers notched another goal for the home team, assisted by Mark Tobin and Kenny Roche, at 5:04. The Nailers would pull Darling from net after he allowed two goals on just two shots. Justin Coutu scored his first goal of the year as he slipped the puck past net minder Peter Vetri at 9:59 of the first, with Mark Tobin tallying the assist. Olson found the back of the net on the power play at 12:27, as Randy Rowe and Garlock assisted. The Chiefs carried a 4-0 lead to the dressing room after one, out-shooting the Nailers 21-3.
Darling would return to net for Wheeling in the second. Olson would strike again for Johnstown 5:16 into the period, with assists from Andrew Martens and Brian Deeth. Garlock would notch a power play marker of his own at 7:01, with Rob Drummond and Deeth each picking up an assist. Tobin tallied the final goal of the game for the Chiefs at 14:14, on a shot from Desrochers. The Nailers would pick up a goal of their own at 17:08 of the second, on an unassisted effort from Kyle Rank. Johnstown held a 7-1 lead over Wheeling after 40 minutes of play.
The Chiefs would kill a Wheeling 5-on-3 power play early in the third, and neither team would find the net in the remainder of the period.
Ryan Nie earned his 23rd win in net for the Chiefs, stopping 25 of 26 shots. Johnstown went 2-for-7 on the power play.
