Johnstown Chiefs News Release

TRENTON, Nj. - The Johnstown Chiefs turned in a solid 60-minute road effort in picking up a 3-0 win over the Trenton Devils on Wednesday night.

Johnstown was the first team to visit Trenton after the Devils' three-game road trip to Estero, Florida where they won two out of three against the Everblades. The Chiefs made the homecoming less than joyous with the first goal of the game a little more than halfway through the first period. On a shot by Mike Couch from the left point Jeff Martens deflected the shot in between the hash marks. The puck took a fortunate bounce to Sean Berkstresser who was perched just off of the right post. His shot banked off of Dave Caruso and right to Matthew Myers who potted his third of the season, second against the Devils, at 10:52.

Not wanting to give Trenton any life on home ice, the Chiefs struck quickly in the second period to double up their lead. Going left to right, Chanse Fitzpatrick hit Troy Schwab on the wing with plenty of open ice around him. Bryan Marshall found a cushion at the left side of the net and planted himself there. Schwab whistled a pass to the front and Marshall had an easy time chipping it into the cage for his 14th of the season. The score was registered at the 2:12 mark of the period, and that would be all the scoring for the frame. The Chiefs and the Devils each earned two power play chances in the second, but were unable to convert.

Trenton was able to manage 11 shots on goal in the third period, but none came from the high-percentage scoring areas. The Chiefs did give them some momentum with power play chances on penalties to Jonathan Ralph and Fitzpatrick. But the goaltending and defense held the fort, and once Fitzpatrick's penalty expired he was eager to join the attack. Marshall carried the puck in across the Trenton line and into the slot. As he fired off a wrist shot, Fitzpatrick set up on the left edge of the crease and pounced when Caruso left the rebound within his reach. It was his 22nd goal of the year registered at 13:30 of the third.

John Murray turned in a 29-save performance for the Chiefs' first shutout of the season. The power play went 0-for-6 while the penalty kill was 5-for-5.
