Chiefs break attendance record

PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Chiefs announced that the 2005 season finished in a franchise record for attendance with 256,612 fans watching Midwest League action at O'Brien Field this season. Rick Angelo and his family broke the record of 254,407 set in 2002 shortly after the gates opened at 1:00 PM on Monday. The Angelo's received two Club Box Seats season tickets for the 2006 Chiefs season. O'Brien Field opened in downtown Peoria on May 24, 2002 after 23 home games had been played at Vonachen Stadium. With 47 games played at O'Brien Field (capacity 7500), the final 2002 tally set a franchise record at 254,407. This season the Chiefs set a single game franchise record at 9,602 on July 28th against Dayton when Nomar Garciaparra rehabbed with the Chiefs. The previous night the Chiefs played in front of 9,004, also with Garciaparra on the roster. Less than a week later, the Chiefs and Kane County played in front of 8,401 on a Tuesday night with Kerry Wood rehabbing out of the Chiefs bullpen. In total, the Chiefs played in front of six sellout crowds in 2005 and 15 times there were over 5,000 fans at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs had two home games rained out this season so the 256,612 fans attended 68 games for an average of 3,773 fans per game, also a Chiefs record. Since the opening of O'Brien Field, the Chiefs have played 252 home games in front of 934,803 fans, an average of 3,710 fans per game. The Chiefs will open the 2006 season next April needing just over 65,000 fans before they welcome the one millionth fan in O'Brien Field history.
