Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
BELOIT, WI -- Beloit Snapper starting pitcher Kyle Aselton allowed just one hit over eight innings and struck out ten to lead the Beloit Snappers to a 5-0 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Wednesday night at Pohlman Field. The win gives the Snappers a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three first round Midwest League playoff series. The Rattlers did not get their first hit off Aselton until there was one out in the top of the eighth inning.
Beloit jumped out to the early lead with a first inning run. Trevor Plouffe drew a one-out walk. Deacon Burns followed with a sharp double to the gap in rightcenter. Plouffe beat the relay throw to the plate and made the score 1-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, David Winfree singled with two outs to drive in Plouffe from second base and the Snappers were up 2-0.
Beloit added another run to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Trevor Plouffe was at the plate with runners at first and second with two out. Plouffe sent a high chopper behind the mound. Rattler shortstop Matt Tuiasosopo tried to make the play, but threw wildly to first and the runner from second crossed the plate.
Rattler starting pitcher Mark Lowe walked the next batter -- the sixth free pass issued by Lowe -- to load the bases and that was it for the right hander. Shawn Nottingham came out of the bullpen to retire Winfree to keep the Rattlers down by three.
Wisconsin got a pair of runners on in the top of the sixth inning as Aselton walked Brandon Green with one out and Brent Johnson with two out. But, Aselton recorded his eighth strikeout of the game by getting Oswaldo Navarro looking at a curveball for strike three and the final out of the inning.
Aselton worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning and struck out Chris Colton for the first out of the eighth. Matt Tuiasosopo broke up the no-hitter with a one out double inside the first base bag, but he was left stranded at third when the inning ended.
Jeremy Pickrel launched a leadoff homer in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Snappers went up 4-0. Later in the eighth, a two-out RBI double by Javi Sanchez made the score 5-0.
JP Martinez pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the shutout and give the Snappers the edge in the series.
Game two of the series is Thursday night at Fox Cities Stadium. Aaron Jensen (10-13, 5.56ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kyle Waldrop (6-11, 4.98ERA) is slated to start for the Snappers. Game time is 6:35pm.
If the Snappers win Game Two, they will advance to the Midwest League Western Division Finals against the winner of the Quad Cities-Clinton series. If the Rattlers win Game Two, they will force a deciding Game Three on Friday night at Fox Cities Stadium. That game would also start at 6:35pm.
Tickets are still available for the game and may be purchased at the Fox Cities Stadium Ticket Office, over the phone at (920) 733-4152 or 1-800-WI-TIMBER. Thursday night is a "Bang for Your Buck" Night with soda, hot dogs, and beer available for $1. The ticket office opens at 9:00am Thursday morning.
